<p>For the next year, TIA President Larry Brandt will place an emphasis on education and training. &ldquo;Without trained employees, you cannot survive in the automotive service industry today.&rdquo;</p>

Larry Brandt: TIA must grow

Larry Brandt is a man who believes in education. As a college student, Brandt unloaded tires at a Minnesota warehouse on his summer break. He broke into the tire business full time in 1979 as a wholesale tire and antifreeze broker. In 1985 he merged that company with Tires Plus and he became the vice president of wholesale for the five-store company.

Special tools needed for the Audi Q7

If a wheel sensor of the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) on the 2010 Audi Q7 senses a significant loss of air pressure in one or more tires, the sensor(s) sends signals (values) to the tire pressure monitoring antenna. The antenna transfers the values to the tire pressure control module.

Mobile barcodes: What's with all the little boxes?

Mobile tagging is the process of providing data read from tags for display on mobile devices (source: Wikipedia). These are commonly encoded in a two-dimensional barcode and use the camera of a cell phone as the reader device. The content of the tag code is usually a URL for information that is addressed and accessible through the Internet.

Plans are nothing without actions

Many years ago, I read a cover article in Fortune magazine titled, “Why do companies fail?” The article had huge depth of research and many examples — and these examples of companies who went by the wayside in some cases were titans at the time like Eastern Airlines — remember them? The organizations noted covered many different industries and even different time frames and economic conditions at the respective time.

New fuel efficiency mandates will kill some of the tire competition

Don’t expect any new players in the replacement truck and bus tire market anytime soon. The United States government doesn’t seem to want them.

Mother Nature will have big impact on upcoming tire sales forecast

The challenge of selling big ticket products in today’s economic climate is indeed daunting, and to boot, with most tire companies just having announced a new round of price hikes, your job won’t get any easier.

An apples-to-apples look at light truck, SUV and CUV tires  Web-Only Article

Light trucks, sport-utility vehicles (SUV) and crossover utility vehicles (CUV) are on the move in more ways than one. As they shift from traditional body-on-frame construction to passenger car chassis derivatives, there is increasing demand for them — and tires that offer ride quality, durability and fuel economy.

<p>Here is an example where the injuries are in the crown area, but they are so close to each other that the repairs unit would have to overlap. In this instance the driver got lucky because the tread eventually wore out. If this tire had failed, these repairs would probably be blamed.</p>

Knowing what not to repair

Nobody wants to tell a customer that a flat tire with good tread depth is junk. In fact, most drivers will accept any repair as long as the tire holds air long enough for them to get back on the road. They will even promise to get it changed out as soon as they get home, but usually return weeks later with the same tire in the same position and a mysterious case of temporary amnesia.

fleetHQ milestone: half a million trucks serviced

Since its inception three years ago, Goodyear’s fleetHQ program has serviced 500,000 trucks. Half of them have been this year alone thanks to record summer temperatures that averaged into the high-90s in many parts of the U.S.

The keys to up-selling

What an amazing month it’s been! I have been out in the field with a whole array of independent tire dealers looking at their businesses, meeting and training their store staffs, calling on customers (wholesale to retail), visiting commercial and truck shops while talking to real technicians about their challenges and opportunities, and having executive meetings with leadership teams.

Heavy dose of creativity is needed to increase business

Uncertain European economies, the U.S. debt crisis, Congressional gridlock, 9.2% unemployment and a slumping stock market are enough to explain why consumers are putting off big ticket purchases as long as possible. Add to that, a $1,000 bill for four tires, alignment and a few other suggested repairs further shocks your customers.
