Sky's the limit  

The tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) in the 2008-09 Saturn Sky contains several components: a Body Control Module (BCM), Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC), Driver Information Center (DIC), Remote Control Door Lock Receiver (RCDLR), a radio frequency transmitting pressure sensor in each tire/wheel assembly, and a serial data circuit.

The 2009 Honda Fit’s tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) consists of a low tire pressure indicator, a TPMS indicator and a TPMS control unit. The control unit monitors all four tires and alerts the driver if there is a change in pressure.

The tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) on the 2009 Chevrolet Traverse displays both individual tire pressures and their locations on the vehicle’s Driver Information Center (DIC). The system uses several components: an Engine Control Module (ECM), Body Control Module (BCM), Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC), DIC, Remote Control Door Lock Receiver (RCDLR) and a radio frequency transmitting pressure sensor in each tire and wheel assembly.

Blazing a new Trail (carefully)  

The 2006-08 Chevrolet TrailBlazer’s tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) displays individual tire pressure data and tire locations on its Driver Information Center (DIC) device. The TPMS uses a variety of components: the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), the Body Control Module (BCM), the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC), the DIC, the Endgate Module (EGM), and others. The EGM is on models with the power sliding rear roof. On other models, the EGM is replaced by the Liftgate Module (LGM).

Impressive Impreza  

The Subaru Impreza’s tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) checks tire pressures when the vehicle is driven at speeds of 20 mph or higher. Sensors are installed in each wheel. The TPMS can only be activated when the Impreza is being driven.

Patriotic duty  

The 2007-08 Jeep Patriot’s tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) uses radio and sensor technology to monitor air pressure levels. Sensors are mounted to each road wheel as part of the valve stem. They broadcast to a central receiver circuit inside the Wireless Control Module (WCM). Transponders are located in wheel housings that locate all of the sensors.

When a TPMS sensor is attached to the valve stem, it must be slightly ahead of the traction point to ensure it cannot be damaged by the tire bead during the mounting process. This is especially important when mounting the top bead.

Knowledge is power  

When the editors of Modern Tire Dealer asked me to revisit the subject of electronic tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) relearn tools, I originally set out to author a comprehensive review of the latest technology with all of the features and benefits. Then I had an epiphany while addressing the Tire Dealer Association of Canada (TDAC) convention attendees in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
