AutoFocus: Getting the 2000 Silverado up to Code C0235  Web-Only Article

It will be very helpful to skim through the flow chart to try and determine which way the voltage is traveling. Be sure the flow chart is not asking you to check for voltage, only to have the next line say, “Repair the wire shorted to voltage.” In the case of the Silverado, the PCM should put out about 10.0 volts to the EBCM. A quick voltage test at the EBCM revealed no voltage on the yellow/black wire. Next, the voltage at the PCM was tested and found to be 10.0 volts.

The line between broad-line and high performance has blurred as more cars roll off the assembly line with bigger tire and wheel combos.
August 16, 2010

Remember when broad-line was easy to define?

There was a time when broad-line tires were broad-line tires and performance tires were performance tires, and the two categories rarely, if ever, intersected. Those simple days are long gone, according to tire manufacturers.

More than a niche marketer

Greenball Corp. has evolved a great deal since being formed by Chris Tsai and his wife, Jenny, in Long Beach, Calif., in 1976. The specialty tire distributor began operations in a 2,300-square-foot combination office and warehouse. Since then, it has outgrown its headquarters six times.

AutoFocus: The Honda (!) may tell the A/C clutch to stop working!  Web-Only Article

In the late 1990’s, Honda automobiles started using a blower motor power transistor to control the speeds of the blower motor instead of the traditional blower motor resistor. Now, when the blower motor power transistor fails, the air conditioning (A/C) compressor will become inoperable. When the blower motor does not operate on later model A/C systems, the heater control panel will set a code which in turn shuts off the request for A/C compressor operation.

Independent tire dealers using social media to promote their business run the risk of losing both existing and potential customers if they push specials, sales and services too hard, according to Barry Reese, president of Tire Company Solutions (TCS), a tire dealership software supplier that has been working with dealers to create effective social media campaigns.

AutoFocus: A fix for squeaky Mitsubishi bushings

A Mitsubishi owner may complain of a squeaking or a hard rubbing noise from the rear suspension when traveling over bumps. This condition usually happens when operating the vehicle during cold weather. The squeaking or rubbing noise may be caused by the rear suspension trailing arm bushings rubbing together or possibly contacting the vehicle underbody. To correct the condition, replace the rear suspension trailing arm bushings.

AutoFocus: Initial fix doesn’t fix acceleration problem  Web-Only Article

The technician was working on a 1995 S/T truck with a 4.3L V-6 CPI engine. The complaint was a surge on acceleration and at steady cruise speeds. The tech had determined that the surge was gone when the linear EGR valve was disconnected. Another sign of a possible EGR problem was a reoccurring code 1406, EGR pintle position error. He installed a new EGR valve, but to his dismay, the surge and EGR position problem were still present on the next road test.

How do you reset brake pad warning lights on older BMWs?
June 16, 2010

AutoFocus: A warning about BMW brake pad warning lights  Web-Only Article

In most automotive repair shops, brake jobs are part of the daily bread-and-butter, straight forward repairs that involve parts replacement with little or no diagnosis. Occasionally, however, a job of this sort can throw you an unexpected curve. One such kink in the otherwise straight path of a brake job involves the BMW that comes in with the brake pad warning light on and, upon inspection, needs pad replacement at one or both ends.

AutoFocus: Dead battery fix doesn't lead to dead end  Web-Only Article

While I was working for a Saturn dealer, a new 2006 Saturn Ion was delivered from the factory with a problem in the electrical system. When the vehicle sat for more than a day or two, the battery would be dead. I checked for any lights or modules that were operating with the key off, and noted that the radio clock display was lit -- though there was no sound from the radio-when the key was not in the ignition. Turning on the ignition switch caused the radio to function normally.

The Chinese tariff decision, six months later  Web-Only Article

They said a tariff on Chinese-made tires would disrupt the supply chain. They said a tariff would drive up prices and force their companies to seek products elsewhere. They said a tariff would place an unnecessary burden on low- and middle-income vehicle owners who can’t afford to buy high-end tires.
