Turning training into trophies

Last month, I challenged you as an owner or manager of an independent tire dealership to deal with the hardest part of the people-side of your business: implementing real change in your team’s behavior. How do you coach each employee to perform at a higher level where they tap into new insights and maximize talents — and then generate higher results?

Your own growth trap

The broadly held definition of the difference between small business ownership and entrepreneurism boils down to a single word: “growth.” Increasing sales is not, by itself, growth.

Farm tires: a bountiful year  Web-Only Article

It has been a good year to be a farmer. It also has been a good time to sell tires to them. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), net farm income is forecast to be up 31% at the end of 2011, to $103.6 billion, up $24.5 billion over 2010.

Broken records: 2011 SEMA Show wrap-up

The numbers don’t lie. The 2011 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show was a huge success. A record 132,000 people attended the event, according to the Tire Industry Association (TIA), which sponsored the show’s Global Tire Expo section. There also were 61,000 buyers, also a record and close to 19% higher than last year.

The sports marketing trend  Web-Only Article

Sports marketing is a numbers game. Hits on a webpage ad are more important than hits during a baseball or football game. Impressions and views count for more than outcome.

(Motor) sports marketing  Web-Only Article

Any NASCAR fan knows. What’s the official tire of NASCAR? Goodyear. And it will remain that way at least for the next five years. In October 2011, Goodyear and NASCAR signed an extended agreement for Goodyear to continue as the exclusive tire used in NASCAR’s top three racing series for the next five years.

Hot wheels, cool tires

There are two kinds of people who buy high-performance wheels and tires. One is looking to improve the appearance of their vehicle, or to customize it so they can stand out in a crowd. The other is doing something that will enhance the performance of the vehicle.

Making customer service part of your brand

It would be a gross exaggeration to say I’m an avid reader of anything outside the sports pages on the Web. For me to pick up a book and read it from cover to cover says a lot about the book, not to mention my interest on the subject.

Budgeting for success

Hard to believe it’s fall already and time to think about your 2012 business budget. Or are you one of those tire dealers who doesn’t do budgets? Sadly, there are many dealers like that.

Larry Brandt: TIA must grow

Larry Brandt is a man who believes in education. As a college student, Brandt unloaded tires at a Minnesota warehouse on his summer break. He broke into the tire business full time in 1979 as a wholesale tire and antifreeze broker. In 1985 he merged that company with Tires Plus and he became the vice president of wholesale for the five-store company.

Mobile barcodes: What's with all the little boxes?

Mobile tagging is the process of providing data read from tags for display on mobile devices (source: Wikipedia). These are commonly encoded in a two-dimensional barcode and use the camera of a cell phone as the reader device. The content of the tag code is usually a URL for information that is addressed and accessible through the Internet.

Plans are nothing without actions

Many years ago, I read a cover article in Fortune magazine titled, “Why do companies fail?” The article had huge depth of research and many examples — and these examples of companies who went by the wayside in some cases were titans at the time like Eastern Airlines — remember them? The organizations noted covered many different industries and even different time frames and economic conditions at the respective time.

An apples-to-apples look at light truck, SUV and CUV tires  Web-Only Article

Light trucks, sport-utility vehicles (SUV) and crossover utility vehicles (CUV) are on the move in more ways than one. As they shift from traditional body-on-frame construction to passenger car chassis derivatives, there is increasing demand for them — and tires that offer ride quality, durability and fuel economy.

The keys to up-selling

What an amazing month it’s been! I have been out in the field with a whole array of independent tire dealers looking at their businesses, meeting and training their store staffs, calling on customers (wholesale to retail), visiting commercial and truck shops while talking to real technicians about their challenges and opportunities, and having executive meetings with leadership teams.

Wheel weights: new choices

What started as a ban in the European Union has become a movement in the U.S. It is a movement away from lead. Lead-free wheel weights are sweeping the U.S. marketplace, and manufacturers and dealers are taking a new look at this often-overlooked part of tire maintenance and service.

TPMS: the next generation

They’re becoming a greater fact of life for tire dealers. Tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) have been required on all new vehicles under 10,000 pounds since 2007. But the technology was first required on 10% of vehicles in 2001. Now, some of those older sensors are reaching the end of their service life.
