“I don’t think you should use social media for selling,” says Kevin Kraft, co-owner of Kraft Tire in Marlborough, Mass. “There are other avenues for that. You want to post things people can relate to.”

Social media

By now, you’ve probably heard of Facebook and Twitter. You may even be familiar with YouTube and LinkedIn. These platforms are part of what’s popularly called “social media,” the latest Internet age phenomenon.

The OE tire size on the Ford Excursion is LT265/75R16 Load Range E, with a load index of 123. How does a P265/75R16 with a load index of 114 compare? What is the reduction in maximum load?

There's nothing 'light' about light truck tires  Web-Only Article

I had spent the year prior to my 16th birthday working at my father’s tire shop unloading and stocking tires in between janitorial duties and whitewall scrubbing. So before I could legally drive a car, I thought I understood the differences between passenger and light truck tires.

Still revolving and evolving

Twenty-two years ago, Bridgestone Corp. introduced the ground-breaking Blizzak studless winter tire to the world. Seventeen years ago, the company’s United States subsidiary introduced the Blizzak WS-15 to domestic tire dealers.

Ready, set, goals

It’s pretty darn hard to get from here to there without a road map. Laying out your goals bridges the gap between who you are today and the person you sketched out in your mission statement. Yet when I ask people all over the country whether they write up their goals each year, barely one in 10 say they have. But that 10% gushes over how spelling out their goals transformed their lives.

Put the brakes on VW vibration

Volkswagen drivers may complain of a pulsating brake pedal when applying the brakes at highway speeds. The pulsation may also be felt as a vibration in the vehicle body. Additionally, the steering wheel may shake. The cause may be improperly machined brakes, and the condition may not be felt until several months after the brakes were machined. To correct the problem, follow these steps.

AutoFocus: Making sense of wheel speed sensors  Web-Only Article

Wheel speed sensors and how we test them have been changing. Currently, two types of wheel speed sensors are in use: magnetic inductive (passive) and magneto resistive (active). Passive sensors have been around since the early days of the anti-lock brake system (ABS). These are the sensors that function on the generator principle. The sensors work with the toothed tone wheels to monitor and provide the anti-lock brake module (ABM) with wheel speed information.

Computing power

More tire dealership software products and services mean more options for tire dealers. What’s the most important function provided by tire shop software? We recently posed that question to several dealers.

How to use credit to secure repeat business

There are many tools at the independent tire dealer’s disposal that can be used to secure repeat business. Some dealers put customers on strict preventive maintenance plans. Some promote tire rotations, oil changes, brake checks and other interval-based services. Others bring customers back with specials and coupons.

Using mounting and balancing to process more cars

Here’s your dilemma: due to the ongoing recession, your budget for capital improvements is the same as last year — nil. That means no new service bays or machinery for your garage.

The changing face of HP/UHP  Web-Only Article

Take a close look at the next late-model, mid-size sedan that rolls into your parking lot. Make note of the car’s tires. More often than not, you’ll find larger tires with a smaller aspect ratio and a higher speed rating — tires that perhaps 10 years ago would have been confined to the high performance or ultra-high performance categories.

Backing up is a squeaky move

Some Toyota Corolla or Matrix drivers may experience front brake squeak noise when the car is traveling in reverse at low speeds. Updated front disc brake cylinder (caliper) mountings and disc brake pad support plates are available to improve this condition. The repair procedure involves first conducting a road test to verify the noise condition, and second removing and replacing the front disc brake pad support plate (two per each caliper).

'Pop' goes the Chrysler minivan

Chrysler or Dodge minivan drivers may complain of a squeak, creak, pop and/or clicking sound coming from the rear of the vehicle when driving over bumps or while turning. This repair involves replacing both rear spring hanger brackets. To correct the condition, follow these steps. NOTE: This repair applies to all-wheel drive (AWD) and front-wheel drive (FWD) minivans built between Sept. 16, 2002 (MDH 0916XX), and Sept. 28, 2002 (MDH 0928XX).

Survival of the smartest

Without question, 2009 was one of the most difficult years independent tire dealers have faced in a long time. For many, survival was the name of the game.

The best never rest

Success has many fathers, as the saying goes. One sire to my company’s exponential growth (the Tires Plus stores) was our obsession with improving the way we did things. We were fanatical about identifying roadblocks, unearthing errors, and fine-tuning our system. Part of our campaign included benchmarking the highfliers; and one way we did that was an occasional intel-gathering field trip.

Are you protecting your teammates?

Trust is essential in today’s business world. Every day people talk about how important trust is, yet few know how to create it. Trust comes when people know they can count on you. Trust comes when people know you’re there for them. When people protect each other, there is trust — it’s that simple. When you’re committed to others and their well-being, you can expect an extraordinary commitment in return.

“As we look to 2010, we see all the manufacturers starting to ramp up spending,” says Saul Ludwig. “There is a general feeling that consumer tire demand will increase.”

AutoFocus: Ford’s intermittent dead battery problem  Web-Only Article

We all know that intermittent problems are the worst thing to try to diagnose, mainly because when the problem is not present, there is very little we can do to pinpoint it. We get these types of calls everyday, and usually the technician is just hoping we’ve run into something common that fits their symptoms.

Noisy brakes create complaints

The driver of a Cadillac Escalade, Chevy Avalanche or other GM truck may complain of a “scraping” noise intermittently coming from the rear of the truck while driving. This condition may be due to the parking brake shoe contacting the drum-in-hat rotor without the parking brake being applied, causing premature wear on the shoe lining.
