Retreaders look for better year  

It’s been a tough environment for retreading, and the numbers show it. According to Modern Tire Dealer’s 2010 Facts Issue, published last month, an estimated 13 million retreaded medium and heavy truck tires were produced in the U.S. last year vs. 14.7 million medium and heavy truck tire retreads produced in the U.S. during 2008.

Ag tire applications are evolving, and ag tire manufacturers are offering new products to match the needs of farmers. According to Michael Burroughes, director of marketing, agricultural tires for Michelin North America Inc., farms are “getting larger and larger, increasing pressure on farmers to choose farming measures and tools that are efficient.”

Falken Tire Corp. will take control of the Ohtsu truck tire brand in North America next month. The company displayed several Ohtsu tires at the 2009 Specialty Equipment Market Association Show, held this past November.

Falken Tire Corp. will return to the medium truck tire market next month when it takes over distribution of the Ohtsu truck tire brand in North America. The Fontana, Calif.-based company will assume control of Ohtsu from Itochu International on March 1.

Snider Tire opens Houston retread plant  

Despite a particularly devastating recession that has forced many commercial tire dealerships to put their expansion plans on hold, Snider Tire Inc. is pressing forward. The Greensboro, N.C.-based company recently made a substantial investment by replacing its existing retread shop in Houston, Texas, with a new, 100,000-square-foot Michelin Retread Technologies Inc. (MTRI) plant.
