Automotive Aftermarket Industry Week (AAIW) kicks off Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, in Las Vegas. Comprised of the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show, which includes the Tire Industry Association (TIA) Tires, Wheels & Equipment (TWE) section, and the Automotive Aftermarket Products Expo (AAPEX), AAIW will include more than 4,000 U.S. and international exhibits. The AAIW expects more than 100,000 attendees who will get a chance to preview more than 7,500 new products.

Open for business  

Despite being held during a particularly intense global economic recession, the 2009 edition of Autopromotec drew a record number of attendees (101,620), 2.4% more than the last edition of the show, which was held in 2007.

What economic recession? The forecast is sunny, say Kumho executives  

If you had the foresight to stock extra 225/50R17 ultra-high performance tires or 225/65R17 P-metric light truck tires last year, chances are you sold them all. Domestic shipments of those two sizes increased dramatically in 2008 compared to 2007. Conversely, shipments in broad-line size 215/70R15 dropped by more than 1 million units year to year.

Declaration of independence: There are no plans to sell, says Les Schwab CEO  

Since Les Schwab’s death in 2007, rumors have swirled about the fate of Les Schwab Tire Centers Inc. The company’s move from small-town Prineville, Ore., to resort-town Bend, Ore., already was in motion, but that hasn’t stopped the naysayers who predict a sale is inevitable.

At Hankook Tire America Corp., control — or more accurately, “Kontrol” — is the new buzzword. The tire manufacturer used last month’s Specialty Equipment Market Association Show as a vehicle to introduce its Kontrol Technology to the North American market.

Despite production cutbacks...  

Despite the current economic climate and supply-and-demand imbalances that have forced various manufacturers to temporarily clip production, Michelin North America Inc. (MNA) remains committed to North American manufacturing, says MNA Chairman and President Dick Wilkerson. (Wilkerson replaced former MNA Chairman and President Jim Micali this past August when Micali retired.)

In the 1800s, “Go west, young man!” was a famous expression. This year, the Independent Tire Dealers Group LLC (ITDG), until recently a western states-focused organization, is going east.

MAST makes BIG changes: Aptly named Alliance program changes relationships  

On Jan. 1, independent retailers who buy Michelin, BFGoodrich and Uniroyal consumer tires from MAST (Michelin Americas Small Tires) will begin purchasing the tires under MAST’s new Alliance Associate Dealer (AAD) program. Michelin calls the new program a “fundamental shift” in the way it will do business with its dealers.

Up to 60% of tires made at Hankook’s Jiaxing, China, plant are exported to North America.
