Command performance

The tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) in the 2006-09 Jeep Commander uses radio and sensor technology to monitor air pressure levels. Sensors are mounted to each wheel as part of the valve stem. Each sensor sends data to a central receiver circuit inside the Wireless Control Module (WCM). On premium models, the sensor transponders are mounted in the wheel housings.

The myth behind using retreads on steer axles

No bus shall be operated with regrooved, recapped or retreaded tires on the front wheels.” Other than the redundancy of including “retreaded” and “recapped” in the same sentence, Title 49, Part 393.75 (d) of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations is quite clear.

Why numbers can be deceiving

Numbers, by themselves, don’t lie. They can be misleading, however, if not put in the proper context.

Proceeding with caution

Cautiously optimistic is probably the best way to describe the mood of independent commercial truck tire dealers as the domestic truck tire market rumbles into the remaining months of the year.

The steer tire of the future

The steer tire of the future will most likely boast fewer ribs, straighter grooves and simpler tread patterns as truck tire manufacturers continue to pursue lower rolling resistance and the minimization of irregular wear, says Roger Stansbie, director of tire technology, Commercial Division, for Continental Tire the Americas LLC.

To build a brand

Long known for its specialty tire expertise, Alliance Tire U.S.A. has never enjoyed a medium truck tire product of its own in North America — until recently.

Cruisin' along

The PT Cruiser’s tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is unusual in that it does not specify how many tires are low or where they are located.

Tiremakers go green with SmartWay

It’s no secret that fuel efficiency has been a top concern among trucking fleets for many years. However, up until recently, any effort by fleet owners to reduce fuel consumption and, in turn, their rigs’ greenhouse gas emissions, by running low rolling resistance tires on tractors and trailers was strictly voluntary.

TPMS for trucks? Try ATIS instead

When the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) mandated the use of tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) on all vehicles under 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), I knew that passenger and light truck tire service would change forever.

No relearn required

The Jeep Wrangler’s tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) uses radio and sensor technology to monitor air pressure levels. Sensors are mounted to each wheel as part of the valve stem and broadcast tire pressure data to a central receiver circuit inside the Wireless Control Module (WCM). If a low pressure condition exists, the WCM will send a request to illuminate the low pressure warning light and to sound a chime.

Navigating the Matrix

The 2009 Toyota Matrix’s tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) contains sensors that are installed in each tire and wheel assembly. The sensors send air pressure data to the tire pressure sensor antenna and receiver assembly. This data is then sent to the tire pressure monitor electronic control unit (ECU), which compares the measured air pressure with the specified pressure.
