RFID and the tire industry

The inventory tracking and management tool can be a time saver

By: Matt Strong

The Advanced ID RF 5000 scanner for medium truck, light truck and passenger tires is a simple device. It will do everything needed in most cases. However, for fleet use, you also will need the Fast Check tools in order to automate as much of the data collecting as possible for the tire tech.

In tires, radio-frequency identification (RFID) is used for inventory tracking and management. RFID consists of a tiny radio transmitter (high technology transponder) and chip that are placed inside a tire or on the outside sidewall. This transponder/chip assembly can be interrogated by a scanner that contacts it using the correct frequency and protocol.

But RFID is much, much more. There are so many applications for this technology that it is staggering. Let’s review the buzz words, history and other applications using RFID technology.

While serving in the Marines as a Distribution Specialist, I became very familiar with RFID technology. I have used RFID in the States and overseas. Being what they are and what they are used for, they are convenient. We use them on most of the pallets that are being transported from point A to point B. They can be tricky if the database is not right. That's why proper training and adequate information is important. There have been times where I see containers that come off the ship with RFID. When scanned information would be wrong according to what's on the container. Other than that, they help. Good investment that the government has put money into. We track and locate to the very grid.
