The economy, OE tires and Sears: final notes from the Goodyear Dealer Conference

<p>The company has had fun with the Goodyear logo in its ads.</p>

Following what appears to be a record year, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. held its 2012 Dealer Conference in Orlando, Fla., Jan. 29-31. I was on hand for all the new product announcements, plus some fleet HQ announcements.

Tire tariffs did not equal jobs, despite what President Obama said

Our industry is worth -- drum roll, please -- more than $38 billion!

Wow. We all knew that tire pricing rose significantly in 2011. Not all of it stuck at the passenger tire level, but prices rose well into the double digits for all segments.

Sears Auto Centers may be in a state of flux

The big aftermarket news over the holiday is that Sears Holdings Corp. has announced it is closing 100 to 120 Kmart and Sears full-line stores. How many of the 837 Sears Auto Centers is unknown at this point.

Are 1,203,053 people counting down to a tire plant closing?

There are a lot of people who are very upset with Cooper Tire & Rubber Co.'s recent lock out of 1,051 workers at its Findlay, Ohio, consumer tire plant. And executives of the United Steel, Paper and Forestry, Rubber, Manufacturing, Energy, Allied Industrial and Service Workers International Union (USW) are only too happy to let you know who they are.

Kumho Tire U.S.A. Inc. did not have a booth at the 2011 SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) Show in November. That doesn't mean the company wasn't represented in Las Vegas.

TV magic fudges the facts, but BFGoodrich gets some free publicity

<p>Waitaminute -- that isn't a BFGoodrich Rugged Trail T/A!</p>

On a recent episode of "NCIS: Los Angeles" on CBS, the good guys were trying to catch the bad guys by identifying a tire tread pattern left in the desert. Based on the evidence, the vehicle had dual rear wheels.

With one more 'black' quarter, Goodyear will set a 21st century record

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. recently reported net income of $161 million for the third quarter ended Sept. 30, 2011. That is the third time this year the company has posted quarterly net income.

World Series game is a sign that sports marketing works for Dobbs Tire & Auto Centers

Well, what do you know. Bottom of the eigthh inning, one out, and St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Allen Craig at the plate. The Texas Rangers are leading the Cardinals 7-4 in the sixth game of the World Series, and Craig hits a home run to make it 7-5.

The history and forecast for in-line tire price adjustments in 2011

When a company announces a tire price increase "of 5%," it's across the board. If the announcement says "up to 5%," you know two things: The price of every specified tire will be increased, and there will be a ceiling of 5%.
