My eight-day drive to Florida and back is over, and I'm happy to say that the independent tire dealers I visited are doing fine. There wasn't a single doom-and-gloom attitude among them.

R-E-S-P-E-C-T, or lack thereof

I write this on Memorial Day, perhaps the ultimate day of respect. In the 230-plus years the United States has been in existence, millions of soldiers have lost their lives to keep it a safe haven for the rest of us.

Global warming for tire imports

We live in a global economy. That is not going to change, and protectionism is not going to help our economy get better faster. Even the United Steelworkers (USW) partially agree (more on that later).

Will OEM bankruptcies affect your dealership? No

Given billions in losses, it was not surprising that Chrysler LLC, General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. would shutter plants and car dealerships. More closings are certainly on the way.

Will domestic tiremakers back a Chinese tire quota?

The United Steelworkers believe that Chinese imports are out of countrol. That is why the USW (which technically stands for the United Steel, Paper and Forestry, Rubber, Manufacturing, Energy, Allied Industrial and Service Workers International Union) filed a petition with the United States International Trade Commission asking for relief.

Continental and General star in 'Fast & Furious'

Tuner, muscle and sports cars starred in the 'Fast & Furious' movie.

Did the original movie, "The Fast and the Furious," start the euro tuner craze back in 2001? No, but it certainly exploited the trend. Along the way, it helped promote the Toyo brand, which was featured (but not credited) in the movie and its less-than-successful sequels.
