‘A once in a lifetime experience’

John and Janice Kelsey cross the finish line during “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing,” the 2011 Indianapolis 500 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The strip of bricks at the start/finish line is all that is left of the original brick race track surface.

John Kelsey, owner and president of Kelsey Tire Inc. in Camdenton, Mo., recently had what he termed a once in a lifetime experience. He drove the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval.

Some critics are saying 'Rubber' stinks

Remember “Rubber,” the movie I told you about in my blog way back in January? It’s about a rogue tire that rolls around the desert blowing up objects using its telepathic power – including people’s heads (see “'Rubber' meets the road, and goes on a killing spree.” Well, it’s rolled into movie theaters in a limited number of major cities, and the film critics are weighing in on it.

'American Pickers' picks Corky Coker for television segment

I saw one of my favorite tire industry people on one of my favorite TV shows a couple of weeks ago. Corky Coker, president of Coker Tire Co., was featured on the History Channel’s program, “American Pickers.”

'Rubber' meets the road, and goes on a killing spree

I’ve been hearing about this for at least a year, but I thought it was some kind of prank and dismissed it. But now it appears there really is going to be a movie released called “Rubber” about a tire that goes on a killing spree.

Bucking past trends, gas prices and miles traveled are both on the rise

According to the AAA, “The current national retail average price for a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline is $3.04, up six cents from a week ago, 19 cents from a month ago, and 44 cents from a year ago. This marked the first time that the U.S. has ever nationally spent Christmas Eve with a $3 or greater per gallon price at the pump.”

Tire store gift certificates make great stocking stuffers

I read a blog recently by some guy who was criticizing a tire company’s radio ad which suggested that gift certificates for its tire stores make great stocking stuffers. “Not even close,” he said, “by a country mile.”

Survey results not so surprising about TPMS

A recent survey conducted by Schrader International found that 46% of drivers couldn’t figure out what the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) “idiot light” on their dashboard really was. Seems consumers can’t interpret the art – that U-shaped icon with an exclamation point on the inside.
