Press release offers insight into AAA tire retailing practices
By: Lori L. Mavrigian
Since a AAA club based in Cincinnati, Ohio, recently acquired 30 retail tire stores, I find myself looking at AAA's press releases e-mailed to me in a new light. As I see it, they're now offering a glimpse into the business philosophy of a retail tire dealer -- not just an automobile club.
Its most recent release outlined what AAA considers important winterization steps. I figure this list will be used as a "Winter Preparation Package" offered at the 30 outlets.
In addition to winter tires and correct tire pressure, AAA notes these maintenance items that need to be addressed:
1. Antifreeze -- a 50/50 solution of engine coolant and water will provide the necessary antifreeze capability.
2. Hoses -- need to be inspected for leaks, cracks or loose clamps.
3. Cooling system flush -- and new coolant installed when recommended by the vehicle manufacturer, typically necessary every two to five years.
4. Electrical system --the battery needs to be tested, especially if the battery is older than three years.( AAA Mobile Battery Service will test members’ auto batteries at no charge.) If the battery has removable caps, the cells need to be checked to make sure are filled to the proper level with distilled water. Also, all cable connections need to be tight with no corrosion on the terminals or clamps.
5. The alternator belt needs to be inspected and adjusted.
6. Windshield -- the fluid reservoir needs checked and filled with a windshield cleaning solution with antifreeze components. The operation of the pump and aim of the sprayers needs to be cheched, too.
7. Winter wiper blades -- condition needs to be checked for areas that can inhibit good contact between the rubber blade and glass.
8. Brakes -- make sure brakes are in properly working order and perform a brake fluid flush with new fluid installed every two to three years. Check the owner’s manual for the recommended service intervals.
Bob Sumerel Tire & Service is the first independent tire dealership that the AAA has ever purchased. It also owns 58 auto repair shops across the country.
Whether the AAA will purchase more independent tire dealerships remains to be seen. But their press releases have taken on new meaning.
Let me know what you think. I'm listening.
