Mark your calendars for classic car appreciation events

Mark your calendars for a couple of events that cater to Americans’ love affair with their automobiles.
On June 5, 2010, Hot Rod magazine’s Hot Rod Power Tour will kick off at the Iowa Speedway in Newton, Iowa. The seven-day, seven-city, high-end car cruise attracts thousands of classic car enthusiasts from around the country who drive all or part of a designated route from Iowa to Alabama with stops every night in host cities. The event concludes on Saturday, June 12, in Mobile, Ala.
“As the Tour journeys across the country, hot rod enthusiasts can bring their vehicles to be a part of the Tour to the first city, or to any city along the way,” cruise organizers note. “From their point of origin, the participants can sightsee, explore and show off their custom car creations in car crazy towns in each participating city and points along the way. Throughout the seven days hot rod owners will be able to pick up and take off from any city following fellow car enthusiasts to the final destination in Mobile.”
Host cities this year include Springfield, Ill.; DuQuoin, Ill.; Bowling Green, Ky.; Chattanooga, Tenn.; Birmingham, Ala.; and Mobile. The cruise’s final destination is the U.S.S. Alabama in Mobile where “long-hauler awards” will be presented to various drivers who traveled the whole route.
(At the Chattanooga stop on June 9, Coker Tire Co. will hold the Coker Tire block party, where hot rodders will be able to enjoy food and entertainment and tour Coker Tire and its Honest Charley facilities.)

And July 9, 2010, has been designated as “Collector Car Appreciation Day” thanks to a resolution passed by the United States Senate -- Resolution 513 (S. Res. 513) -- at the request of the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) and the Automotive Restoration Market Organization (ARMO) Council.
“The resolution was the result of an effort undertaken by SEMA and its councils as a means to raise awareness of the vital role automotive restoration and collection plays in American society. Restoration businesses help save our nation’s heritage while providing well-paying, high-skilled jobs nationwide,” SEMA says.

Anything that draws attention to preserving America’s great automotive history is a good thing -- especially if it gets younger generations interested in carrying on the legacy.
And you might want to tie in tire promotions to the upcoming events, and certainly if the hot rod cruise comes to your town!
