'Rubber' meets the road, and goes on a killing spree

By: Lori L. Mavrigian

I’ve been hearing about this for at least a year, but I thought it was some kind of prank and dismissed it. But now it appears there really is going to be a movie released called “Rubber” about a tire that goes on a killing spree.

Yes, you read that right. The film was directed by Quentin Dupieux, and it’s about an abandoned tire named Robert that rolls around and discovers it can blow up objects via telepathic power – including beer cans and people’s heads.

I am just going by what reviewers have said. I have not seen the film. It doesn’t go into limited release until April.

The movie is being described as a satire/horror/comedy that even has some romance thrown in – seems Robert is attracted to a mysterious, beautiful woman.

Think I’m making this up? Well, here’s a link to the trailer: http://www.rubberfilm.com

I studied the trailer to see which brand of tire they used for the star of the film, but can’t see any markings on the sidewall. You will probably recognize the tread pattern. If you do, please leave me a comment and let me know what it is.

I noticed they used a different tire – a stand-in, perhaps? – for the publicity, which uses the tagline “Are you TIRED of the expected?”

Very interesting. Makes me wonder what the ending will be for Robert. Will he end up on a scrap tire pile? Will his true love save him and recycle him?

Will you go see the movie to find out?

Oh, my. This could be worse than Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. And I never thought I'd say that.
