Some critics are saying 'Rubber' stinks

Remember “Rubber,” the movie I told you about in my blog way back in January? It’s about a rogue tire that rolls around the desert blowing up objects using its telepathic power – including people’s heads (see “'Rubber' meets the road, and goes on a killing spree.” Well, it’s rolled into movie theaters in a limited number of major cities, and the film critics are weighing in on it.

“A hilarious sleight-of-hand,” says one.

“An essay on storytelling and spectatorship within When Inanimate Objects Attack schlock -- one infused with the haunting aura and disillusionment of a post–‘Easy Rider’ road movie – ‘Rubber’ is some kind of miracle,” says another.

But wait! There appears to be even more who don’t care for it, to say the least.

Watching the movie is “reminiscent of attempting to eat an unpeeled orange in its entirety, forced to bite through the repugnant peel to get to the inner citrus,” says one critic.

And in one of my personal favorite reviews, a critic says director Quentin “Dupieux's idea, apparently, is that movie audiences are so stupid they'll consume anything, and the more tickets he sells for this arch little piece of junk, the more he'll be proved right. If I were you, I'd refuse to give him that satisfaction.”

So before you spend your hard-earned money on going to see the movie, you might want check out what film critics have said about it (good and bad) on the movie review Web site, http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/rubber/.

Their tally notes that 64% of the reviews for the movie have been positive, while only 56% of the audience reviewers had anything nice to say about it.

I think I may have made the right choice by spending my entertainment dollars on “The King’s Speech.”

   Hmmm. I was planning on seeing it. Well, if we do see it, it will be at the Belcourt Theatre in Nashville where they serve drinks during the movie. That should make it better!
