Despite what you may have heard, light truck tires are here to stay

Remember summer 2008, when gas prices went through the roof and everybody was predicting the imminent demise of the SUV and pickup truck? Well, pickups and SUVs are still around -- albeit smaller, in some cases -- and tiremakers continue to crank out replacement tires for those vehicles.

The sale of Bob Sumerel Tire Co. Inc.’s retail division creates yet another competitor for the independent tire dealer: the American Automobile Association (AAA). Yes, unlikely as it seems, come Nov. 1, the AAA will own 30 former Bob Sumerel tire stores. And there probably will be more.
