Earlier this week, rock-and-roll fans (including this reporter) marked the 61st anniversary of Buddy Holly's death. Between 1957 and 1958, Holly had seven Top 40 hits, cramming more talent and energy into his very brief career than most rockers manage to drum up over the course of decades.

Well, baseball season is finally over, and while I never like seeing the Yankees take the pennant, at least the Red Sox didn’t make it to the final round. (Not that the Cleveland Indians are going to get within a million miles next year!) Anyway, with the ‘09 season behind us, I thought it would be fun to look at some tire dealer “all-stars.”

Remember summer 2008, when gas prices went through the roof and everybody was predicting the imminent demise of the SUV and pickup truck? Well, pickups and SUVs are still around -- albeit smaller, in some cases -- and tiremakers continue to crank out replacement tires for those vehicles.

The 2009 Specialty Equipment Market Association Show is in full swing, but it looks a lot different than it has in years past. For starters, the number of exhibitors in the Performance Tires and Wheels section is down considerably.

Two weeks ago, www.moderntiredealer.com broke the story that the American Automobile Association will soon acquire Bob Sumerel Tire Co. Inc.'s retail business. Now another outside entity, Pep Boys, has entered the tire dealership acquisition game.
