RMA: Expect overall shipments to rise in 2010

Tire shipments are projected to increase by approximately 7 million units in 2010 compared to 2009, according to the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA). The 3% increase is in contrast to the 8% drop from 2008 to 2009.

Shimizu appointed president of Toyo Tire Holdings

Toyo Tire Holdings of Americas Inc. reports the company’s president, Masaharu Yoshimoto, will be retiring at the end of March, and that Takashi Shimizu has been appointed its president effective April 1.

Retreaders look for better year  

It’s been a tough environment for retreading, and the numbers show it. According to Modern Tire Dealer’s 2010 Facts Issue, published last month, an estimated 13 million retreaded medium and heavy truck tires were produced in the U.S. last year vs. 14.7 million medium and heavy truck tire retreads produced in the U.S. during 2008.

Falken Tire Corp. will return to the medium truck tire market next month when it takes over distribution of the Ohtsu truck tire brand in North America. The Fontana, Calif.-based company will assume control of Ohtsu from Itochu International on March 1.
