AutoFocus: All locked up with no place to go  Web-Only Article

With some of today’s cars diagnosing those supposedly ‘simple functions’ such as power door locks, power seats, or power windows can get overly complicated. For example, I took a call recently on a 2001 Mercedes C-class. The driver’s complaint was that the door locks wouldn’t work after the car sat for more than an hour, but once they started to work again, they would be fine as long as you used them.

AutoFocus: One Mercedes, TWO batteries?!  Web-Only Article

The technician was working on a Mercedes. A red battery symbol with the message “Visit Workshop” was displayed in the message center of the instrument cluster. The battery and the alternator have been replaced with no results. I asked if testing had been performed on the Battery Control Module (BCM) with a factory-compatible scan tool, and if the front battery had been tested with an electronic battery tester. The reply: “There’s a battery under the hood? Where is it??”

AutoFocus: Don't be afraid of Saturn EGR codes  Web-Only Article

Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) codes become relatively common on GM vehicles as they age. EGR codes are most often the first clue that there’s an EGR flow issue, but sometimes the complaint is related to pinging, due to improper combustion chamber cooling due to a lack of EGR. Some codes are unique to EGR flow while some are unique to EGR valve position. Still other codes can be caused by either a lack of EGR flow or an incorrect EGR pintle position.

AutoFocus: Be a Toyota leak detective  Web-Only Article

Since the start of OBD-II diagnostics, Toyota has used different ways of testing the evaporative emissions system for leaks. The most recent system, starting with 2005 model year, is used on many Toyota, Lexus and Scion vehicles. This system tests for leaks using an evaporative leak detection pump module that is mounted on the charcoal canister under the vehicle. The leak detection pump module reduces the total number of parts.

Returning to returnless fuel systems in the Ford F-150  Web-Only Article

Ford has used “returnless” fuel systems for quite some time now, but we still get many calls regarding the theory of operation and diagnosis of low or high fuel pressure problems. There are two types of returnless fuel systems. One is a mechanical returnless system and the other is the electronic fuel returnless system. This article will deal with the electronic returnless system used on 2004 and newer F-150 trucks.

AutoFocus: Don't dump on the dumping unit  Web-Only Article

If you encounter a Nissan Quest/Mercury Villager minivan (up to the 2002 model year) with the left front brake locking up, see if the right rear brake is locking up as well. This vehicle has a component called a “dumping unit” that is screwed into one of the outlet ports of the master cylinder. The brake line for the left front and right rear brakes come out of this dumping unit. It has been common for the dumping unit to prevent brake fluid from returning back into the master cylinder.

Air conditioning service and repair can be profitable, with few comebacks, or it can be your worst nightmare. Most technicians know that when a customer walks in and wants a tune-up, it’s time to ask a lot of questions. Customers assume their driveability issue will be solved by the magic of this service. It may be, but don’t count on it. The same issue occurs when they ask for “a shot” of refrigerant to fix their air conditioning.

AutoFocus: Intermittent cluster trouble with the Dodge Caliber  Web-Only Article

I received a call on a 2008 Dodge Caliber with an intermittent loss of the instrument cluster (IC) gauges and the warning lights would come on. The symptoms would only occur when the vehicle was actually driven. I asked the technician to check for codes in all of the modules. He called me back with a list of eight stored codes.

AutoFocus: Ford multiplexing challenges and a Crown Vic quick fix  Web-Only Article

From an engineering standpoint, most technicians can see the logic behind module-to-module communication. In theory, it makes sense to have a single input such as a vehicle speed sensor feed just one module, and then have that module share the information over a pair of data bus wires to other modules. Unfortunately for the technicians faced with the challenge of diagnosing and repairing these problems, module-to-module communication often makes our job significantly more difficult.

AutoFocus: Getting the 2000 Silverado up to Code C0235  Web-Only Article

In 2009, I was working on a 2000 Silverado with a technician from northern Minnesota. The Silverado had an anti-lock brake light on with a code C0235 stored. The technician said that the chart indicated it was a rear speed sensor code, but the truck doesn’t have rear speed sensors. This is a good example of different systems sharing information.

AutoFocus: Initial fix doesn’t fix acceleration problem  Web-Only Article

The technician was working on a 1995 S/T truck with a 4.3L V-6 CPI engine. The complaint was a surge on acceleration and at steady cruise speeds. The tech had determined that the surge was gone when the linear EGR valve was disconnected. Another sign of a possible EGR problem was a reoccurring code 1406, EGR pintle position error. He installed a new EGR valve, but to his dismay, the surge and EGR position problem were still present on the next road test.

AutoFocus: Dead battery fix doesn't lead to dead end  Web-Only Article

While I was working for a Saturn dealer, a new 2006 Saturn Ion was delivered from the factory with a problem in the electrical system. When the vehicle sat for more than a day or two, the battery would be dead. I checked for any lights or modules that were operating with the key off, and noted that the radio clock display was lit -- though there was no sound from the radio-when the key was not in the ignition. Turning on the ignition switch caused the radio to function normally.
