Appeals court overturns duties on OTR tires

A United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled on Dec. 19, 2011, that the U.S. Commerce Department's imposition of countervailing duties on China-made off-the-road (OTR) and agricultural tires in 2008 was illegal under U.S. law.

Alliance's acquisition of GPX assets approved

Alliance Tire Group's acquisition of the key U.S. assets of bankrupt GPX International Tire Corp. has been approved. Alliance will acquire worldwide rights to GPX's Galaxy and Primex brands, GPX's U.S. customer list, its warehouse footprint and its medium radial truck tire business.

GPX blames bankruptcy on antidumping duties

GPX International Tire is blaming its decision to file Chapter 11 on a 2007 U.S. Department of Commerce Antidumping/Countervailing Duty inquiry that resulted in "crippling (44%) duties levied" against the firm's Starbright factory in China.

Alliance Tire to acquire GPX International's assets

The Alliance Tire Group has signed an agreement to acquire certain assets from GPX International Tire Corp., which has filed for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code.

On fire a little more than one year ago, the OTR tire market in North America is now suffering from lack of demand due to the intense global recession. Mining activity is down, housing starts are virtually nonexistent, and large-scale construction and repair projects that are expected to be financed by the federal government’s stimulus package have yet to begin.
