More tire price hikes are on the way, Ludwig predicts

“Last month I wrote that due to sharply lower raw material costs during 4Q11 I would not expect to see any further tire price hikes anytime soon. Unfortunately that was a wrong call because predictability of future raw material prices is all but impossible,” says tire industry analyst Saul Ludwig in the latest installment of the "Ludwig Report" in Modern Tire Dealer magazine.

How much Cooper will benefit sans tariff

Saul Ludwig, a managing director at Northcoast Research Holdings LLC, believes the 25% Chinese tariff on consumer tires imported from China will end this year. And one of the big winners will be Cooper Tire & Rubber Co.

Consumer tire sales should increase, Ludwig says

"For sure, the retail consumer tire business was rather lackluster in 2011 as the combination of high gasoline prices (that led to a decline in miles driven), high unemployment and low consumer confidence led to tire buying deferral," says tire industry analyst Saul Ludwig in the latest installment of the "Ludwig Report" in Modern Tire Dealer magazine.

Lockout will have little effect in 4Q, says Ludwig

Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. and United Steelworkers (USW) Local 207L were unable to reach an agreement, leading to a lockout at the company's Findlay, Ohio, plant. How will that affect Cooper's financials, and, perhaps, the state of its stock price?

'It's tough it out time' again, says Ludwig

"The challenge of selling big ticket products in today’s economic climate is indeed daunting and to boot, with most tire companies just having announced a new round of price hikes, your job won’t get any easier," says tire industry analyst Saul Ludwig in the latest installment of the "Ludwig Report" in Modern Tire Dealer magazine.

Why the prices are right for Cooper's success

What do scheduled price hikes from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., Michelin North America Inc. and Continental Tire the Americas LLC have in common? They all should have the effect of strengthening Cooper Tire & Rubber Co.’s prices in the fourth quarter of this year.

Ludwig predicts little if any growth in 2011

Tire shipments were down in 12% in May, according to tire industry analyst Saul Ludwig. That was worse than expected, and he has reduced stock performance estimates for Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. accordingly.

High fuel prices impact tire demand, Ludwig says

"Besides my regular channel checks with tire dealers and manufacturers, I speak often with suppliers of raw materials including producers of synthetic rubber, carbon black, steel cord and polyester,” says Saul Ludwig in the latest installment of the "Ludwig Report" in Modern Tire Dealer magazine. "Their message is that they cannot keep up with demand from tire manufacturers."

If you think Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. had a good first quarter, just wait for the year to unwind.

So far, so good for Goodyear

If a stock is rated "Buy," and after first-quarter results are released it remains a "Buy," the company must be doing something right.
