How to prevent harassment

At most, political correctness has taken over our lives. At the very least, it has taken over our livelihoods.

Competing against your supplier

Competing against your supplier

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. recently announced it was going to sell tires online from its website. There is no question in my mind other tire manufacturers will follow suit within the next 24 months.

Proper tire inflation

Do you remember the classic 1960’s television show “Hogan’s Heroes”? I call it a classic because it was a successful situation comedy about a German P.O.W. camp during World War II. That idea would never make if off the drawing board in today’s politically correct society.

Bitter battle?

Bitter battle?

In a nutshell, the RMA wants tire dealers to be responsible for registering tires purchased at their shops. TIA wants the consumer to be ultimately responsible.

Too much overreacting

Too much overreacting

As a general rule, I don’t like overreaction. Whether it is in response to a seemingly terse email or the potential outbreak of a life-threatening disease, at the very least it can lead to emotional turmoil.

Price fixation

Price fixation

By the time the last tariff on Chinese consumer tire imports ran its course, the average price of a tire had risen 28.4% in four years. Those lingering 4 for $99 specials suddenly became 4 for $127.11.

Ties that bind

Ties that bind

Bruce Halle, chairman of Discount Tire, is our 2014 Tire Dealer of the Year. That alone makes him special. Only 21 other independent tire dealers can put themselves in his shoes.

When China and friends took over

The year is 2024. Consumer tire imports from China are way down compared to 10 years ago.

Ed Bobit: end of an era

I liked Ed Bobit because he was always trying to raise the bar of his company, Bobit Business Media Inc., and its 21 magazine titles, including Modern Tire Dealer.

Status: single

Status: single

The strength of the single-location, mom-and-pop store cannot be underestimated, but it often is. Maybe it’s because growth and consolidation among the national and regional chains gives everyone the impression that as the big get bigger, the small get smaller.

‘Made in America’

‘Made in America’

Did you know that the song “Born in the U.S.A.” is more anti-American than American in attitude? Bruce Springsteen wrote it to protest the treatment of veterans returning from the Vietnam War.

Final words on tire aging

This is absolutely the last editorial I will write on tire aging. Not counting this one, I have written four since 2002.

Premium vs. performance

Premium vs. performance

Is “premium” replacing “performance” as the hot tire industry buzzword? I would say yes. Tire manufacturers have been quick to use it when sharing their marketing strategies with their dealers.

Why doesn’t the Federal Trade Commission investigate American Tire Distributors? Isn’t ATD a monopoly?”

Numbers of biblical proportions!

Our annual January Facts Issue is well named, and the 2014 version may be our best ever. Look at what it has to offer: six stories and 27 charts (four more than last year!) covering everything from consumer and commercial tire shipments to tire sizing.

RMA: Friend or foe?

Remember when the relationship between the two largest associations in our industry was contentious? We had the former National Tire Dealers and Retreaders Association (NTDRA) on one side, and the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) on the other.

What is a Tier Two tire? Tier Three?

What is a Tier Two tire? Tier Three?

Be honest. When you hear the phrase “Tier One tire,” which brands come to mind? The answer is easy. Goodyear, Michelin and Bridgestone are the anchor brands on which most dealers base their product screens.

Effective management

Effective management

Two young entrepreneurs each started a retread shop in the same city. One expanded his shop into a smoothly run organization that provided new tires, brake and front-end work and other allied services. He eventually moved into wholesale, commercial and retail sales as well.
