Status: single

The strength of the single-location, mom-and-pop store cannot be underestimated, but it often is. Maybe it’s because growth and consolidation among the national and regional chains gives everyone the impression that as the big get bigger, the small get smaller.

‘Made in America’

‘Made in America’

Did you know that the song “Born in the U.S.A.” is more anti-American than American in attitude? Bruce Springsteen wrote it to protest the treatment of veterans returning from the Vietnam War.

Final words on tire aging

Final words on tire aging

This is absolutely the last editorial I will write on tire aging. Not counting this one, I have written four since 2002.

Premium vs. performance
April 15, 2014

Premium vs. performance

Is “premium” replacing “performance” as the hot tire industry buzzword? I would say yes. Tire manufacturers have been quick to use it when sharing their marketing strategies with their dealers.

ATD is OK with the FTC

Why doesn’t the Federal Trade Commission investigate American Tire Distributors? Isn’t ATD a monopoly?”

Numbers of biblical proportions!

Our annual January Facts Issue is well named, and the 2014 version may be our best ever. Look at what it has to offer: six stories and 27 charts (four more than last year!) covering everything from consumer and commercial tire shipments to tire sizing.

RMA: Friend or foe?

RMA: Friend or foe?

Remember when the relationship between the two largest associations in our industry was contentious? We had the former National Tire Dealers and Retreaders Association (NTDRA) on one side, and the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) on the other.

Caring about Obamacare

New health care requirements are about to change the way you do business. And whether you believe it is for better or worse, you have to be ready to deal with them.

What is a Tier Two tire? Tier Three?

What is a Tier Two tire? Tier Three?

Be honest. When you hear the phrase “Tier One tire,” which brands come to mind? The answer is easy. Goodyear, Michelin and Bridgestone are the anchor brands on which most dealers base their product screens.

Effective management

Effective management

Two young entrepreneurs each started a retread shop in the same city. One expanded his shop into a smoothly run organization that provided new tires, brake and front-end work and other allied services. He eventually moved into wholesale, commercial and retail sales as well.

Here come the judges

Who doesn’t want to be “on top of the list, head of the heap, king (or queen) of the hill?” Frank Sinatra did, and he sang about it in “New York, New York.”

Word-of-mouth says it all

Word-of-mouth says it all

The phrase, “Any publicity is good publicity” may work in the entertainment field, but it doesn’t work in the retail tire industry. Recalls and scandals are always bad. So is poor customer service.

Oh, Canada
July 25, 2013

Oh, Canada

Unless you are a native, Canada is a foreign country. It has its own sovereignty, currency and culture, or should I say, cultures (see Quebec). But how “foreign” is it?

It’s a global economy
June 13, 2013

It’s a global economy

We live in a global economy. It affects us all, both directly and indirectly. Close to 60% of the independent tire dealers in the United States are single-store owners, and they, too, are shaped by what happens overseas. They are not isolated because their market reach is only 10 miles from their front doors.

Is profitability a bad word?

Is profitability a bad word?

The words were informative and impactful. Unfortunately, they were interpreted negatively by the tire dealers in attendance. As a result, they sent the wrong message.

Policy control: Do you allow employees to bring guns to work?

Policy control: Do you allow employees to bring guns to work?

Gun control may be the hottest topic on all government levels: federal, state and local. The Obama Administration wants to enact legislation that will not only make background checks more rigorous, but also ban assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition clips.

Retailers on wholesalers

Retailers on wholesalers

The tire wholesale distribution channel has changed a great deal in the last 10 years. The big got bigger. And the larger distributors stopped being just “tire wholesalers.”

Anchors aweigh or away?
February 13, 2013

Anchors aweigh or away?

Our name for them is “anchor brands.” Almost all tire dealers have them. They are the brands to which you tie your name, often by posting a sign on or outside your store. Or both.

Back to the basics

One side says increasing taxes is the answer. The other side says cutting spending is the answer. Neither side has shown any respect for the other.

Is MSRP the new MVP?
December 18, 2012

Is MSRP the new MVP?

Remember when Michelin North America Inc. implemented its Maximum Value Policy (MVP) program on BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO light truck tires some 12 years ago? The program was designed to protect the tire’s profit margins and beef-up sales.
