Thanksgiving weekend is turning into a cluster of retail holidays, and tire sales are part of the fuss. There’s Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Busiest Travel Day of the Year Sunday (I made that one up) and Cyber Monday.

Nov. 30, 2013 is Small Business Saturday, a day the Small Business Administration (SBA) says is to celebrate and support small businesses and all they do for their communities.

I didn’t really feel the impact of the government shutdown when it started on Oct. 1, 2013. I knew government offices would close, but “critical services” like air traffic controllers and food inspectors would stay on the job.

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. has been in the headlines a lot lately. Last week the company announced an “outstanding” second quarter, and we also reported that the tire maker reached an agreement with the United Steelworkers.

Kumho Tire U.S.A. Inc. spends a lot time and energy determining current consumer trends. The biggest trend since the recession has been for consumers to keep their cars longer and longer, delay maintenance and delay buying tires.

I recently attended the Tire Industry Association’s (TIA) “Tires at 2 - Making Customer Service Part of Your Brand” educational session during the Specialty Equipment Market Association Show (SEMA). The session outlined brand reputation and what tire dealers can do to make their brand more reputable.

The subject of teen driving safety is a critical one. Today’s kids have grown up online and many used a computer mouse before they could hold a crayon. They’re wired 24/7. They need to learn how to give their complete attention to the job of operating a vehicle – and not the hard way.

Akron, Ohio, is my hometown. My great grandmother came to Akron from Scotland and was a maid for Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. founder Franklin Seiberling. I remember all the rubber factories, and the smell of rubber in the air.
