Former Owner of Quirk Tire, Edward "Ed" Quirk, Has Died

Edward "Ed" Quirk Jr., former CEO and president of Edward S. Quirk Co. Inc., which does business as Quirk Tire Co., died on Jan. 5, 2017, at his home in Lexington, Mass. He was 87.

Ed was CEO and president of Quirk Tire from 1955 to 1985. He learned the business from his father, Edward Sr., who started the company in 1926 on Arsenal Street in Watertown, Mass. The third generation, Ed's son John Quirk, took over the business in 1985, and then acquired VIP Tires & Service in 2001. Headquartered in Lewiston, Maine, VIP Tires operates 56 locations throughout Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

Ed was a Lt. JG U.S. Navy Veteran and a 1951 alumnus of Boston College, where he was a member of the varsity baseball team.

He is survived by his beloved wife Jane of 63 years; a daughter, five sons and their spouses; 17 grandchildren; one great-grandchild and many friends in the tire business.

The funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 9 at St. Joseph Church in Belmont, Mass  Visitation is from 3 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 8, at Stanton Funeral Home, 786 Mt Auburn St.,Watertown, Mass.

Interment will be at the Calvary Cemetery in Waltham, Mass.

Michelin Adds New UHP Tire to Pilot Line

Michelin Group’s new Pilot Sport 4S has a Y speed rating (186+ mph) and offers a 30,000-mile warranty. The product line initially includes 35 sizes, in widths ranging from 225mm to 345mm, aspect ratios from 30 to 45, and rim diameters from 18 to 20 inches.
