Michelin Advances Tire Safety 'Beyond the Driving Test' in 40 States

Michelin North America Inc. and the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the global governing body for motorsports, have secured the commitments of 40 U.S. states and the District of Columbia to include standard tire-safety information in driver’s manuals.

The curriculum is  part of Michelin’s Beyond the Driving Test program. 

The 40-state achievement comes as the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA), which represents officials in states, provinces and territories engaged in the administration and enforcement of driver and motor vehicle laws in the United States and Canada, releases its updated Best Practices for its members to include consistent language for proper tire pressure and tread depth.

“Even seasoned drivers rarely think about the condition of their tires,” says Pete Selleck, chairman and president of Michelin North America. “This issue is compounded when the driver has little experience behind the wheel. That’s why Beyond the Driving Test has resonated so strongly across the country with teens, parents, educators and lawmakers.”

The updated AAMVA recommendation features simple instructions for tire safety. To check for proper tire pressure, AAMVA recommends monthly use of a reliable tire pressure gauge while referring to the recommended pounds per square inch (psi) listed in the vehicle owner’s manual or on the driver’s-side door jamb of the vehicle. To ensure a safe tire tread depth, AAMVA recommends the penny test, which enables drivers to easily check for a safe tread depth of at least 2/32-inch.

Michelin launched the Beyond the Driving Test program in 2014 with the FIA to improve road safety in the United States. The program’s objective is securing the commitments of all 50 states to include consistent tire safety information in state driver’s manuals by 2020. Michelin has also created an accredited tire safety education module for driving instructors with the American Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association (ADTSEA).

Since launching the tire safety curriculum in July 2015, Michelin and ADTSEA have trained more than 700 driving instructors, reaching an estimated 200,000 teen drivers through tire safety workshops and special events nationwide. Michelin will feature Beyond the Driving Test at the upcoming Lifesavers  conference held March 26-28 in Charlotte, N.C. 

Later this month, Michelin and FIA will be inducted into the PR News CSR Hall of Fame, which recognizes companies or brands for the impact of multi-year CSR programs. Beyond the Driving Test’s teen YouTube influencer campaign was named the 2016 Community Relations Campaign of the year by PR Week in March 2016 and recognized with three Public Relations Society of America 2016 Silver Anvil Awards. In total to date, Beyond the Driving Test has received 20 national and regional awards among public relations, community service and corporate social responsibility programs.
