Where you might be breaking the law

Think you understand the rules governing how you pay overtime to your employees? Think again. There are two key elements of the wage and hour regulations that many tire store owners unknowingly violate every day.

One area involves bonus pay, the other is salary status says Pat Brown, vice president of marketing for Dealer Strategic Planning Inc. (DSP) and Modern Tire Dealer contributor.

She says dealers cannot wait another day to act: “We are being told that the U.S. Department of Labor, Wage & Hour Division has more than doubled its staff this year and has targeted the tire retailing industry.”

Brown outlines scenarios, penalties and next steps for dealers in “Are you breaking the law? Pay your people correctly or pay the price” online, or on page 32 of the February digital or print edition of MTD.

    Over time may be a problem, yes. The bigger problem is shops not paying taxes, or not charging tax to the customers. If your going to clean up, lets clean house.
