TIA issues stormwater best practices

The Tire Industry Association’s (TIA’s) Environmental Advisory Council (EAC) has issued best management practices intended to provide clarification and guidance for stormwater management at tire and battery automotive service facilities.

TIA says stormwater is the precipitation that accumulates on the tire and battery automotive service facility’s property. Stormwater systems normally flow directly to a creek, river or lake without treatment. This best management practice describes steps that tire and battery automotive service facilities should undertake to minimize their impact on stormwater runoff.

“Stormwater runoff from parking areas can carry oils and greases, antifreeze, particulates, litter and other automotive materials associated with vehicles. By keeping your facility litter free, cleaning up spills immediately and following the other suggestions in this best management practice, you can do your part to help keep our waterways clean,” said TIA board member and EAC co-chair Dick Gust.

This document, along with seven additional best management practices, is available for download free of charge at www.tireindustry.org/resources.

Each of the best practices describes procedures that TIA says should be followed for handling, transporting, recycling and/or disposing of items such as used oil, fluids, degreasers, batteries and tires.

TIA Board Member and EAC Co-Chair Brett Matschke commented, “We are pleased to add this to the TIA library. We strongly encourage TIA members and others in the industry to follow the suggested practices. By working together, we can lessen our industry’s impact on the environment.”

Anyone in the industry who has a best practices topic that they would like the EAC to consider researching and adding to TIA’s library should contact LaKisha Pindell at [email protected].
