When I suggested Modern Tire Dealer unveil On the Rise, our list of young industry leaders, at the biggest industry event of the year, I expected a few eager participants to respond. I knew the leaders were out there, and I thought I’d meet one or two in Las Vegas.
I didn’t expect to have a dozen people hunting me down at the SEMA Show. But this year over many e-mails we’ve built a bond. It was a thrill for me to meet young men and women who are enthusiastic about advancing the industry. It was great to meet and see so many of these young leaders in person.

Modern Tire Dealer is kicking off a new series of interviews with independent tire dealers. We sat down with Rick Benton and Ryan Benton from Black's Tire Service Inc. and asked them questions about issues facing the tire industry. They addressed wholesale distribution, e-commerce and the search for technicians.
Tire dealers are well-acquainted with the economic impact of COVID-19. Retail sales plummeted after the initial shock from the pandemic, but then began to recover as stimulus checks were deposited into Americans’ bank accounts and stay-at-home orders were eased.
There are so many great tools for marketing yourself to new customers. But the telephone is still critical. If your people are not using the phone properly, all of the great marketing campaigns you have launched and all of the other communication tools you are using will be rendered meaningless.
The Automotive Parts Services Group (The Group) will hold a virtual national membership conference and expo August 18-20. With a theme of “Together Towards Tomorrow,” the meeting will bring together members of Federated Auto Parts and National Pronto Association, as well as supplier partners and associates in an online forum.
