On behalf of the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Activities League (SAL), I would like to thank you for your support. As the recipient from Alpio Barbara of Redwood General Tire, your 2016 Tire Dealer of the Year, your donation of $4,750 is an investment in the youth of San Mateo County.
The president of the United States is calling for law enforcement agencies to increase or in some cases begin community policing efforts to address the current issues happening in our nation. The San Mateo County sheriff’s office has taken a proactive stance by creating community programs such as SAL, bringing deputies, youth and community together, while building that relationship and mutual trust.
The SAL programs are designed to build stronger communities through their work with youth. The programs address the needs of our youth in the following focus areas: building the bond between youth and deputies; SAL Healthy Kids; mentoring; leadership and character development. These efforts promote a positive relationship between members of the sheriff’s office and the youth and families of our communities. At SAL, we depend on the talented deputies of the San Mateo County sheriff’s office to fulfill our mission.
We also count on a vast network of concerned businesses and civic leaders to provide the resources necessary to allow SAL to serve the youth of San Mateo County. It’s a unique partnership of community, law enforcement and youth that makes the SAL program successful in making a difference in the lives of the youth and families we serve.
I offer my deepest appreciation to Modern Tire Dealer magazine for your support to SAL. Through your generosity we are able to continue to provide these youths with needed resources and the ability to expand programs to serve the increasing need in our community.

Question of the month
Each month we ask members of our National Advisory Council (NAC) a question or questions on a current hot topic. Recently we asked, “The holidays are approaching. Will you be participating in any community charity event for the season such as Toys for Tots or a Salvation Army fund drive? Please tell us how you got involved, how long you’ve been doing it, etc. And besides helping out a grateful charity, tell us what benefits your company, your employees and customers get from your participation.” Here are some of their responses.
- We have an employee who has a daughter who needs two kidneys replaced. We are setting up ways our other employees and our customers can help him financially. We have told this employee that we don’t care how much time the employee misses, he will be paid in full by us. I feel we all take for granted the blessings given to us. Life is about giving, helping, and serving others.
- Thank you for the reminder... we need to get going on this one. I will say this, giving of your time is often more valuable than items or money.
- We will once again be collecting for Toys for Tots. We have been doing this for over 10 years and all our associates seem to enjoy helping out kids. Some of us older ones enjoy getting back in the toy aisles again.
- This is our fourth year to be involved in a warm coat drive for those less fortunate in our community. It pays off for all.
What’s on your mind?

I would love to see the major tire manufacturers do advertising on “How to check your tires for safety.” People are keeping their tires on until they are dangerous.

With the elections behind us, there’s a good vibe in the marketplace from dealers. I would imagine the dealers are conveying some of the sentiment from their customers.
