There was a lot of fanfare surrounding the grand opening of the Pirelli tire manufacturing plant in Silao, Mexico, recently.

Pirelli & Cie SpA Chairman and CEO Marco Tronchetti Provera was on hand. So was Mexican President Felipe de Jesús Calderón Hinojosa.

But so was Paulo Ferrari, the new chairman and CEO of Pirelli Tire North America Inc. and Pirelli Tire LLC. While in Mexico, I had a chance to sit down and talk with him about Pirelli in North America.

He said one of his main goals is to keep fill rates going up.

“The service level (in terms of fill rates) has improved, on average, for all our customers,” he says. When the Mexican plant reaches full capacity, Ferrari will have 5.5 million more high and ultra-high performance tires at his disposal.

Atlhough there are no plans to add to the five modules at the Rome, Ga., MIRS (Modular Integrated Robotized System) plant, recent efficiencies have increased capacity by 25%. Ferrari says replacement tires account for 40% of Rome’s production, and he is looking at increasing that percentage (some OE tires also will come from Mexico).

Ferrari says dealers can expect more capacity from the Pirelli Group overall in the third and fourth quarters of this year. In addition, the new marketing approach “will be fully in place.” The expected result is double-digit growth in premium consumer tire volume in North America, and a 2% to 3% increase in market share.

Pirelli also sells truck and agricultural tires in Mexico, but not in the United States and Canada. Ferrari says exploring that omission is “on my to-do list.”

“It’s very unlikely to happen in 2013. I think we owe it to the group to think about it.”
