One of our National Advisory Council members wrote me and commented on the high number of tire dealerships which had changed hands last year. He was right. On our website, I found reports on more than 20 transactions!

Several companies made multiple acquisitions, namely Monro Muffler Brake Inc., American Tire Distributors Inc., Pete’s Tire Barns and Bauer Built Inc. K& M Tire, which started off 2012 with a purchase, leads off 2013 with another and says it plans to continue to look for growth opportunities throughout the Midwest.

1, Jan. 5, 2012: K&M Tire grows, acquires Don’s Tire

Delphos, Ohio-based wholesale tire distributor K&M Tire Inc. purchased the assets of Don’s Tire in Cross Plains, Wis.  The deal included Don’s Tire inventory and customer list. However, the retail store closed its doors effective Jan. 1.

2. Jan. 25, 2012: Bauer Built buys Walker Tire commercial division

Durand, Wis.-based Bauer Built Inc. purchased the commercial division of Omaha, Neb.-based Walker Tire and Auto Service.

3. March 13, 2012: Monro Muffler Brake to buy Kramer Tire

Rochester, N.Y.-based Monro Muffler Brake Inc. entered into an agreement to purchase all assets of Norfolk, Va.-based Kramer Tire Co.

4. March 13, 2012: TBC enters into a definitive merger agreement to acquire Midas

TBC Corp. acquired Midas Inc.

TBC Corp. is a wholesale supplier to independent regional tire retailers and distributors throughout North America. Additionally, TBC’s wholesale group operates Carroll Tire, a regional tire wholesale distributor servicing independent tire dealers across the United States.

TBC’s Retail Group operates more than 1,200 franchised and company-owned tire and automotive service centers under the brands Tire Kingdom, Merchant’s Tire & Auto Centers, NTB (National Tire & Battery) and Big O Tires. TBC is owned by Sumitomo Corp. of America (SCOA), the largest subsidiary of Sumitomo Corp.

Midas offers brake, maintenance, exhaust, steering and suspension services plus tires at more than 2,250 franchised, licensed and company-owned Midas shops in 14 countries, including nearly 1,500 in the U.S. and Canada. Midas also owns the 161-store SpeeDee Oil Change business.

5. April 12, 2012: Pete’s Tire Barns acquires Quirk Tire

Pete’s Tire Barns Inc. acquired certain assets of the Commercial Tire Division of VIP Inc. dba Quirk Tire Co. The combination of Pete’s Tire Barns and Quirk Tire will allow Pete’s to expand sales and service of giant tires, farm tires, industrial and truck tire markets within New England.

The Westborough, Mass., location will become the 19th location for Pete’s Tire Barns, which operates in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Vermont and New Hampshire. VIP Inc. operates 56 retail automotive stores in Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

6. May 10, 2012: Colony buys Monro's Kramer facilities, sells retail

In a move to focus on its commercial and wholesale business, Colony Tire Inc., Edenton, N.C., bought the commercial facilities that Monro Muffler Brake Inc. acquired from Kramer Tire Co. in March 2012.

In return, Monro Muffler Brake bought 18 Colony Tire retail stores in North Carolina and Virginia.

7. May 25, 2012: ATD acquires Consolidated Tire & Oil

American Tire Distributors, Inc. (ATD) executed a stock purchase agreement of Consolidated Tire & Oil Inc. (CTO). CTO services more than 500 customers from three Louisiana distribution centers located in Baton Rouge, Slidell and Lafayette. This acquisition will strengthen ATD’s market position in Louisiana. CTO, like ATD, focused their resources on their distribution infrastructure and delivering outstanding customer service.

8.  June 06, 2012: 10 distribution centers: S&S buys Simms

S&S Tire acquired Simms Wholesale Tire, a wholesale tire distributor in Louisville, Ky.

Prior to the acquisition of Simms Wholesale Tire, S&S Tire’s most recent wholesale expansions were in Van Buren, Ark., and Mobile, Ala.

9. Aug. 22, 2012: Bauer Built buys two stores in Minnesota

Bauer Built Inc. acquired Hanson Tire Service Inc. The purchase included the company's two commercial/retail outlets: one in LeRoy, Minn., where Hanson's headquarters is located; and one in Preston, Minn.

10. Sept. 18, 2012: K&M buys two Reliable Tire warehouses

K&M Tire Inc. entered into an agreement with Reliable Tire Co. to purchase two of Reliable's warehouses in Texas, one in Houston and the other in Dallas.

Headquartered in Blackwood, N.J., Reliable Tire has additional tire distribution warehouses in East Syracuse and Albany, N.Y.; Hartford, Conn.; and Atlanta, Ga.

Following the purchase, Delphos, Ohio-based K&M Tire will have 14 wholesale locations serving customers in 20 states from Ohio to Texas. A 15th distribution facility in Barnesville, Minn., is expected to begin operations soon.

11. Nov. 5, 2012: Monro to buy Tire Barn Warehouse

Tire Barn Warehouse, headquartered in Anderson, Ind., announced plans to sell the majority of company assets to Monro Muffler Brake Inc.

12. Nov. 30, 2012: ATD gets a foot in Canada's door

American Tire Distributors Inc. acquired the assets of Edmonton, Alberta-based TriCan Tire Distributors. It is the first time the company expanded its services beyond the borders of the United States.

TriCan, a division of Triwest Trading (Canada) Ltd., has 15 distribution centers stretching across the country.

13. Dec. 7, 2012: McCarthy Tire buys Main Tire Exchange

McCarthy Tire Service Co. Inc. acquired Main Tire Exchange Inc.

Based in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., McCarthy Tire also adds to its six Bandag retread plants. Dansville, N.Y.-based Main Tire Exchange brings one shop to the mix. (See "McCarthy Tire increases retread output by 12%.")

Main Tire Exchange's three commercial tire locations are in Buffalo, Dansville and Rochester, N.Y.

McCarthy Tire Service is headquartered in the heart of Wyoming Valley, Penn. With the purchase of Main Tire Exchange Inc. and its Bandag retread plant, McCarthy Tire Service Co. Inc. increased its number of Bandag plants to seven. It also increased its daily truck tire retreading capacity by 12%.

14. Dec. 10, 2012: East Bay says 'aloha' to 2 retail stores

East Bay Tire Co. purchased R&G Tire Center Inc., a two-store retail dealership based on the Big Island of Hawaii.

East Bay Tire is based in Fairfield, Calif. It has wholesale distribution centers in Fairfield, Fresno, Benicia, Bay Area, Sacramento and Pittsburg, Calif., and Waipahu, Hawaii.

15. Dec. 11, 2012: Monro buys 3 more dealerships. They are...

Monro Muffler Brake Inc. purchase Enger Auto & Tire, a 13-store chain based in Mentor, Ohio; Tire King, a nine-store chain based in Durham, N.C. (Monro is only buying 12 of the 13 Enger Auto outlets), and Ken Towery's AutoCare SuperCenters, a 27-store chain based in Louisville, Ky.,

Monro now had 853 stores.

16. Dec. 19, 2012: Growth for a king: Royal Tire acquires St. Paul Tire

Royal Tire, Inc., a St. Cloud, Minn.-based provider of tire and related services to commercial and retail customers, acquired St. Paul Tire, a full-service commercial tire store in Newport, Minn.

The purchase brings Royal Tire’s total store count to 24.

17. Dec. 20, 2012: Pete's Tire Barns buys New Haven Tire

Pete’s Tire Barns Inc. expanded into New Haven, Vt., with the acquisition of New Haven (Vt.) Tire Co.

In 2013, Pete’s Tire Barns will celebrate its 45th year in business. The company is made up of  20 full-service locations throughout New England; a centrally located distribution center; two state-of-the-art Bandag retread facilities and an online store.

18. Jan. 2, 2013: K&M Tire buys Michigan Tire & Wheel

K&M Tire Inc. based in Delphos, Ohio, acquired Michigan Tire & Wheel of Crystal, Mich. The acquisition furthers the expansion of K&M Tire in Michigan, which has locations in the Detroit and Grand Rapids area.

Earlier in 2012, the wholesale tire distributor purchased a warehouse in the Kansas City area and two Reliable Tire locations in Dallas and Houston, Texas.
