While you’re watching the “Big Game” on Sunday, you might be interested to know that the product you sell plays a major part in the safety of the athletes.

The synthetic turf the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers will battle on at New Orleans’ Mercedes-Benz Superdome is partly made up of millions of tires which have reached the end of the lifespan for which they were originally designed.

A Calhoun, Ga., company, Shaw Sports Turf, makes the Momentun 51 artificial turf that covers the field of Super Bowl XLVII. It says its product gives another life to tires’ components and has other great environmental benefits.

According to the company’s website, “Unlike natural grass, Shaw Sports Turf needs no water, and no costly fertilizers or pesticides. It can save millions of gallons of water every year. There is no need for pollution producing maintenance equipment. And because the infill is composed of rubber, millions of tires each year are kept out of landfills. Best of all, at the end of the field’s useful life, all components can be either reused or recycled through our Shaw Green Edge Recycling Program.”

Momentum 51 has a 2.5-inch pile height and a two-inch infill that is a 50/50 mix of sand and rubber to offer firmness and safety.

The field will give neither team an advantage as both have experience on this exact synthetic turf. Each has practice fields covered with Shaw’s Momentum 51 product. The Ravens’ game field also has it.

As for me, I’ll be cheering for the 49ers. (Cleveland Browns’ fans have long memories.)
