Sheldon Schmucker, who died earlier this year at 89, "never met a stranger."

In going through my emails, I am sorry to say I missed one from January -- January 16, to be exact. That was the day Brad Schmucker, owner of Millersburg Tire Service Inc. in Millersburg, Ohio, called to tell me his 89-year-old father, Sheldon, had died the day before.

No excuses on my end. I was away at the wedding of my niece at the time, and was slow catching up with that period in time. Since my phone messages appear in my inbox, I should have seen it.

But it was an important enough event that I couldn't just let it pass without comment.

On Feb. 18, 1953, Sheldon Schmucker and his brother-in-law, Art Miller, wrote a check to the Standard Oil Co. for $215.08 for 1,000 gallons of gas. With that first payment, Millersburg Tire Service Inc. was off and running.

Both Schmucker and Miller were on hand for Millersburg Tire's 60th anniversary party in 2013. That was the last time I talked with Sheldon, although I keep in touch with Brad, who took over sole ownership of the business in 2007. I remember an old customer of Sheldon's had traveled quite a-ways to help him celebrate.

Miller, by the way, is 94 and still "sharp as a tack," according to Vice President Brandon Schmucker, Sheldon's grandson and Brad's son.

I first met the Schmuckers at one of their annual pancake breakfasts many years ago. I don't remember if it was officially called a pancake breakfast, but I remember I ate a lot of pancakes.

I end this overdue tribute to Sheldon Schmucker with his obituary, which honors his love of family. After reading it, I think you will know why I expect Millersburg Tire to remain family-owned for generations to come. -- Bob Ulrich

Sheldon D. Schmucker of Millersburg, Ohio, passed from this life to his Heavenly home on Jan. 15, 2018. He was born on Oct. 29, 1928, on the family farm in Louisville, Ohio, to Howard and Verna (Miller) Schmucker.

Sheldon married his sweetheart, Blanche Miller, on July 9, 1950. In 1953, they moved to Millersburg and he started a filling station with his brother in law, Art Miller, called Schmucker & Miller. The business eventually became known as Millersburg Tire Service.

In his retirement, he loved spending time with his family, golfing in Florida, traveling with his wife and talking with people. He never met a stranger. Sheldon loved to mow, buy and sell cars, and search for golf balls at the golf course.

He and Blanche supported missionaries all over the world, and he was never afraid to share his love for his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He grew up attending Beech Mennonite Church in Louisville, was a member of NewPointe Community Church Millersburg Campus, and was a snowbird member at Bethel Baptist in Bradenton, Fla.

Sheldon is survived and dearly loved by his wife of 67 years, Blanche (Miller) Schmucker and his five children: Brad (Diane) Schmucker, Patricia (Patrick) Sage, Doug Schmucker, Wes (Kris) Schmucker all of Millersburg; and Sheila (Steve) Trifelos of Strasburg.

Three generations of Schmuckers: Sheldon, co-founder; Brandon, vice president; and Brad, president.
