Black's Tire Service Inc. is expanding its North Carolina footprint this month. The 88-year-old tire business from Whiteville, N.C., is adding Perry Brothers Tire Service Inc., an 84-year-old tire dealer from Sanford, N.C., to its portfolio.

The six Perry Brothers stores in Dunn, Jonesboro, Oxford, Sanford, Smithfield and Southern Pines will retain the Perry Brothers name for the time being, said Rick Benton, vice president of purchasing and marketing for Black's Tire. The personnel at those stores will not change.

"We're partnering up. They're good quality people and a good business. That's exactly what we're all about," Benton says. "They started business in 1933, and Black's started in 1929. We're big on history, and even with all the changes and consolidation in the industry, we still believe so much in people, relationships and friends in the business."

Perry Brothers' roots in the tire business go back to 1933 when Hugh R. Perry bought a service station and started selling Goodyear-brand tires. Four generations of the Perry family have worked for the operation.

Benton says the dealership has remained a big dealer of Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. tires. The business has that in common with Black's Tire.

Perry Brothers also has been a longtime customer of BTS Tire and Wheel Distributors, the wholesale business owned by Benton's father, Ricky Benton. "They're a part of the BTS family."

The addition of the six retail Perry Brothers stores gives Black's Tire 44 stores in the Carolinas. They were No. 29 on the 2016 MTD 100.
