Set-up Sets Stage for Stage Strategy: Talladega shares a left-side tire recommendation with its sister restrictor plate track in Daytona.  The asphalt at Talladega has become somewhat more abrasive since its repave in 2010, requiring a right-side tread compound change in 2014 for improved wear.  This tire combination leads to multiple pit strategies, which may become even more interesting with NASCAR’s new stage format. 

Teams in both the NASCAR Sprint Cup and Xfinity Series will run the same tire set-up at Talladega this weekend. For Sprint Cup teams, this combination of left- and right-side tires dates back to October 2014 while for Xfinity teams, since they don’t run at Talladega in the fall, they started running this tire set-up in May 2015. Teams in both of these series also ran this left-side code at Daytona in February. On all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run inner liners in all four tire positions at Talladega, air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.
