American Tire Distributors Inc. (ATD) plans to open another mega-sized mixing warehouse — this one in Pennsylvania — and close a much smaller facility in Findlay, Ohio.

The new mixing warehouse will be built in Blakeslee, Pa., but will be known as the ATD Pocono Mixing Warehouse. It's expected to open in the third quarter of 2018, and will serve customers in the Northeastern U.S. and Eastern Canada.

At 1 million square feet, it will match in size what is currently the company's largest mixing facility, in Shafter, Calif., north of Los Angeles, and will be larger than the mixing center ATD opened in Roanoke, Texas, in May 2017. That one, known as the Alliance Regional Mixing Center, spans 756,000 square feet.

The Pocono Mixing Warehouse will hold 1 million tires. Its opening will coincide with the closure of the 400,000-square-foot facility in Ohio. ATD says it is working to offer Findlay employees positions at the Pocono location, or any of its other 120-plus U.S. facilities.

The new facility will alleviate pressure on ATD's mixing warehouse in Maiden, N.C., "as ATD customer need has shifted demand to the Eastern seaboard."

The ability "to combine and expedite inventory to distribution centers will empower ATD to better support the market and meet supplier growth," the company says. About 100 loads of tires are expected to move in and out of the Pocono facility each week.

“Our goal is to be the most customer-centric distributor the tire industry as ever seen,” says David Dickey, chief supply chain officer for ATD. “Every move we make as a company aims to better align ATD with our suppliers and support future growth, so we can continue to re-invest in our employees.”

The Pocono Mixing Warehouse is the company's latest phase in what it calls a multi-step strategy to increase efficiencies within its hub-and-spoke networks.
