Michelin North America Inc. is updating its lineup of rigid dump truck tires with two new products, the Xtra Load Grip for soft, loose or muddy ground conditions, and the Xtra Load Protect for hard, flat and dry surfaces. The Xtra Load Grip is replacing the Michelin XDT and X Traction tires. The Xtra Load Protect replaces the Michelin X Quarry S and X Haul tires offerings.
“It is a common worldwide practice to add side boards and lift gates to rigid dump trucks in order to increase payload capacity for optimal profitability. This demand puts incredible stress on the tires,” says Jamey Fish, director of earthmover marketing for Michelin. “This new, robust Michelin tire range provides a solution so that the maximum amount of material can be loaded into these trucks while still delivering traction, damage resistance and increased tire life.”
The Michelin Xtra Load Grip is designed for the conditions found in mining and quarrying operations on slopes and inclines, where the priority is high grip and traction. Due to a reinforced casing, the tire has a 16% higher payload (according to feedback from 23 customers and tests performed with 140 tires in 10 countries). Michelin says that amounts to an increase of 9 tons in load capacity per machine The tread is made up of 30% more lug edges, which increases grip and also improves braking, cornering and accelerating.
The tire has the ability to drive 21 mph due to the cooler internal running temperatures, compared to a Michelin XDT tire in the same size. The tire also provides 8% more wear resistance than the XDT tire.
The Michelin Xtra Load Protect is for uses where the priority is protection and damage resistance, such as quarries and construction sites. This application is for customers who want to carry more load and increase the distances they carry every hour. The new highly protective and damage-resistant tread pattern contributes to a better load distribution across the contact patch. This tire has interlocking blocks and improved heat dissipation that reduces the temperature in the tread area by up to 17 degrees F.
Michelin says these Xtra Load tires are the first 24.00R35 size tires on the market to earn the three-star rating governed by the Tire and Rim Association.
Managing your inventory
The tires will be available in two tread compounds (A4 and B), which Michelin says will help tire dealers more easily manage their stock.
Here's how the lineup will replace Michelin's existing products:
Xtra Load Grip A4*** replaces XDTA4**
Xtra Load Grip B*** replaces XDTB** / X-Traction SC
Xtra Load Protect A4*** replaces X-Quarry S**
Xtra Load Protect B*** replaces X-Haul**
For the Xtra Load Grip , the TMPH is increased by at least 20.3% in the A4 compound and 13.5% for the B compound, when compared against previous Michelin ranges. For the Xtra Load Protect, the TMPH is increased by at least 14% in the A4 compound and 42% for the B compound, when compared against previous Michelin ranges.
Michelin says the extended load and speed capability allows users to optimize machine cycles and increase productivity. And greater more tread rubber in contact with the ground contributes to better load distribution, improved wear resistance and an increase in tire life.
