Bridgestone/Firestone continues meetings with NHTSA

July 17, 2001

Bridgestone/Firestone (BFS) Inc. has scheduled another round of meetings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) next week.

"Our position remains unchanged: our tires are safe," say BFS officials.

BFS and NHTSA representatives have met regularly since the agency launched its preliminary investigation of Firestone Radial ATX, ATX II and Wilderness AT tires more than a year ago -- most recently this week.

"We've supplied NHTSA, Congress and the public with volumes of data, both from the field and the lab... removing our tires is not the solution.

"The only way to stop tragic Ford Explorer accidents is to take a good, hard look at the vehicle itself."

Their next meeting takes place on Monday.
