Congressman J. Dennis Hastert, former Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, will be a special guest at this year’s Tire Industry Association (TIA) Honors Awards Ceremony on Monday, Nov. 3, 2014, in Las Vegas.
Speaker Hastert, an auto enthusiast, will be giving the keynote address about pending legislative issues such as the effort to repeal the estate tax, the transportation infrastructure bill, and the need for small businesses to become actively involved in the legislative process.
“As the longest serving Republican Speaker in history, we are truly honored to have Congressman Hastert with us for this event especially since it takes place the night before the election,” says TIA Executive Vice President Roy Littlefield.
During his 20 years in the House, Speaker Hastert focused his efforts on lowering taxes, improving education, strengthening Social Security and Medicare, and fortifying national defense efforts. He championed legislation to balance the federal budget, cut taxes and government waste, and clean up the environment. He also passed legislation to reduce government regulations in areas such as trucking and telecommunications in order to increase competition and consumer choice. His efforts also included energy development, telecommunications reform, and health care reform, which resulted in the development and implementation of Health Savings Accounts.
During his tenure as Speaker of the House, Speaker Hastert was instrumental in passing post-September 11th antiterrorism legislation and historical legislation to create a Department of Homeland Security — the most significant restructuring of federal government in the past 50 years, reports TIA.
Since retiring in November 2007, Speaker Hastert has worked on various projects in the areas of education, transportation and energy. He served as a member of the board of Advance Illinois, is on the board of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and is a Senior Advisor at Dickstein Shapiro LLP.
