Ford hires former NHTSA administrator as consultant

Ford Motor Co. has hired two former government administrators to help advise the company on tire safety-related matters.

Dr. Sue Bailey, former administrator for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), was hired to advise the company "on its effort to replace 13 million Firestone Wilderness AT tires at no cost to Ford customers," says a Ford spokesman.

Jim Hall, former chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, also is serving as a consultant to Ford. Hall will work on improving the company's "early warning system," designed to quickly detect potential problems with vehicle components, including tires.
