ABC News is reporting on tire aging again. And it is integrating the latest investigative report into its news coverage on Wednesday, May 14, 2014.
According to the ABC report, spearheaded by Chief Investigative Correspondent Brian Ross, eight states have proposed laws that would limit tire usage based on the age of the tire. All eight have been defeated.
ABC says the special investigation will be run on "Good Morning America," "World News with Diane Sawyer" and "Nightline."
The story quotes two people intimately involved in the issue: Sean Kane, founder and president of Safety Research & Strategies Inc., and Dan Zielinski, senior vice president of public affairs for the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA).
Kane has long been a proponent of taking tires out of service -- whether the tire has been used or not -- after six years.
Zielinski and the RMA believe there should not be an age limit on tires. In the story, he describes the six-year time stamp as "arbitrary."
The story adds that the National Transportation Safety Board has launched its own investigation into "the hundreds of deaths each year from 'tire initiated events.'"
