Titan's Taylor calls labor board ruling "a joke"

June 19, 2001

Titan Tire Corp. President and CEO Morry Taylor is calling a recent National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) unfair labor practice ruling against the company "nonsense."

The NLRB has accused Titan of "illegally firing" seven members of the United Steelworkers of America chapter that has been striking at the tiremaker's Des Moines, Iowa, plant since May 1998.

The board has ordered Titan to reinstate the workers, paying them back wages and clearing their employment records.

Taylor will appeal the ruling, which he says was made "by bureaucrats.

"In order to enforce (the ruling), they have to go to federal court, which means I'll get my day in court," he says. "The worst they can do is make me put a sign saying 'I'm a naughty, naughty guy.' I'm not worried about it."
