ATD plans California expansion

March 28, 2014

American Tire Distributors Inc. (ATD) will quadruple warehouse capacity in Bakersfield, Calif., during the first quarter of 2015. The company plans to convert two existing warehouses to a one-million-square-foot operation.

The newly constructed warehouse will be a “significant step in having product where customers need it, when they need it,” says Ron Sinclair, senior vice president of marketing. “We are very excited to be significantly expanding in the Bakersfield area. All of this is to better serve our customers in the Western states.”

ATD currently operates two warehouses with a combined 240,000 square feet of space in the area. One is a former facility operated by Tire Dealers Warehouse, the tire wholesale division of Hercules Tire Holdings LLC acquired by ATD in January 2014. The other facility is a mixing center, which redistributes imported products to ATD’s servicing distribution centers.

The new warehouse will combine those functions, serving as a mixing center for ATD’s western distribution centers and a servicing center for ATD’s customers in Bakersfield and surrounding areas.  When construction is complete in early 2015, the warehouse will have 234 trailer stalls, 201 loading docks and about 10,000 square feet of office space.

ATD currently has 145 servicing distribution centers and three mixing centers in North America. They break down as follows:

* 122 servicing distribution centers in the U.S.;

* 3 mixing (redistribution) centers in the U.S.; and

* 23 servicing distribution centers in Canada.

The mixing centers are located in Bakersfield, Chicago and Charlotte, N.C.
