Certified Tire continues expansion

Nov. 15, 2002

Moreno Valley, Calif.-based Certified Tire & Service Centers will open its 20th store in three weeks.

The eight-bay, 6,300-square-foot facility will be located in Riverside, Calif., according to Certified Tire owner Jeff Darrow.

It will employ 11 people.

Certified plans to open its 21st outlet -- a 10-bay, 11-employee shop -- in April or May next year, Darrow says.

In addition, the dealership will take possession of seven Winston Tire Co. stores it recently bought from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. next week.

Three of those outlets are in Riverside, Calif., while four are located in San Diego, Calif., "a new market for us," Darrow says.

Goodyear acquired nearly 100 Winston Tire outlets a few months ago via bankruptcy court proceedings.

The Akron, Ohio-based tiremaker was a major creditor of Winston Tire, which filed for Chapter 11 protection last January.

Next month's Riverside opening and the Winston acquisition make Certified Tire & Service the 59th largest independent tire store chain in North America, according to Modern Tire Dealer data.
