'Pin-to-pin' design added to Bosch program

Feb. 24, 2014

The Bosch Group has added “pin-to-pin” designs to its OE Fine Wire Iridium spark plug program, designed to provide better ignitability, especially in today’s high-tech engines.

The new Bosch pin-to-pin spark plugs have a fine-wire tipped center electrode and a fine-wire pin on the ground electrode – the pin-to-pin design allows for better ignitability in engines optimized for this design, and requires less firing voltage.

These high-performance spark plugs are tailored to match the OE design spark plugs of specific Asian vehicles, primarily Hyundai, Infiniti, Kia, Lexus, Suzuki and Toyota vehicles equipped with high-tech engines.

“Today’s advanced engines require precise ‘spark projection’ and precious metals to create the best spark in the latest generation of engines, and our pin-to-pin plugs match the OE projection and gap to ensure proper function over the life of the spark plug ,” says Tim Stumpff, senior product manager, spark plugs, Robert Bosch LLC. "Spark projection" refers to the actual location of the spark in the combustion chamber.

“Bosch pin-to-pin plugs also require less firing voltage – producing the optimal ignition spark with a smaller spark gap while increasing durability, engine power and fuel economy,” says Stumpff.

The pin-to-pin Bosch Iridium utilizdes fine-wire technology to deliver best performance. It has a 360-degree continuously laser-welded iridium center electrode made from a proprietary iridium alloy with application-specific spark location. It also features an iridium-platinum inlay laser-welded into the tapered ground electrode along with a fine wire electrode tip – aligned with the center electrode tip – to provide top performance and durability for modern engines for up to 100,000 miles.

“Bosch engineers and vehicle manufacturers work together to develop spark plugs for their vehicles, and we offer premium quality spark plugs that provide superior performance and durability for the motorist by transferring this knowledge and expertise to the spark plugs we produce for the replacement market, using advanced technology, materials and innovation,” Stumpff says.

“Bosch Iridium Plugs provide outstanding performance and durability through extensive use of precious metal in both the center and ground electrodes, and the unique Bosch 360-degree Continuous Wave Laser Welding fuses the fine wire iridium pin to the center electrode. This withstands the intense heat and pressure of the combustion chamber, especially in modern gasoline direct injection (GDI) and turbocharged engines.”

Bosch Iridium is the industry’s only spark plug that utilizes a special iridium alloy fine wire center and 360-degree continuous laser-welding, plus a laser welded iridium-platinum-inlay on the tapered ground electrode. This combination provides a stronger spark with lower, more stable ignition voltage requirements, and a more durable and longer-lasting spark plug., Bosch reports.

Bosch Iridium is backed by a seven-year consumer satisfaction guarantee and a 12-month professional technician warranty that covers parts as well as labor based on an average rate and ALLDATA published labor times, and an 800 number to track claims.
