Ford may ask Bridgestone/Firestone to help pick up recall tab

May 29, 2001

Ford Motor Co. may ask Bridgestone/Firestone (BFS) Inc. to help pay for the recall of some 13 million Firestone Wilderness AT tires on its vehicles, according to Newsweek magazine.

Reports say Ford sent a letter to BFS last week asking that the two companies work together on the recall but the offer was dismissed by BFS Chairman, CEO and President John Lampe.

Newsweek also says "Congressional sources" have stated that Ford's recall is not justified based on data presented by both the auto manufacturer and BFS.
