The International Tire & Rubber Association (ITRA) has created 10 $1,000 scholarships designed to educate technicians about the dangers of servicing commercial tire and wheel assemblies.
The scholarships are named after Dwight Peel, a part-time tire changer from Onoway, Alberta, Canada, who died nearly three years ago just two days after his 17th birthday when a truck tire he was working on blew off the rim and struck him in the head.
Scholarships will be awarded to ITRA members who meet the Louisville, Ky.-based organization's qualifications. Winners will use the funds to attend ITRA's Commercial Tire Service Instructor Training program.
Only dealerships with less than $2 million in sales and no available training assistance from their suppliers are eligible.
