Smithers shuts down Texas tire testing complex

April 2, 2001

Smithers Scientific Services Inc. is closing its Pecos, Texas, tire testing complex due to low business volume.

The Akron, Ohio-based testing lab's 5,800-acre facility is up for sale and will be completely phased out by the end of May.

"We will complete as much testing as possible for our clients during that period," says Smithers' President and CEO J. Michael Hochschwender.

The closing will affect 31 employees.

Smithers acquired the testing complex from Uniroyal-Goodrich Tire Co. in January 1987.
