Pep Boys Offers Tires and Automotive Services With a Mobile Crew

Oct. 23, 2018

The Pep Boys — Manny, Moe & Jack are taking their automotive services on the road. Icahn Automotive Group LLC says the brand is offering preventive maintenance, auto repairs and tires from a trailer and mobile service bay. It's called the Pep Boys Mobile Crew.

Each rig — there are two — is equipped with mobile lifts and the latest diagnostic tools and equipment, plus an ASE-certified technician.

Here's a rundown of the services available:

  • tire repair, replacement, rotation and balancing;
  • check engine diagnostics;
  • brake, shock and strut maintenance;
  • belt and host replacement;
  • heating, air conditioning and cooling system maintenance;
  • battery checks and replacement;
  • wiper blade checks and replacement;
  • headlight checks and replacement; and
  • oil changes and other fluid changes.

The company deployed the Pep Boys Mobile Crew to some of the hard-hit cities in Florida following Hurricane Michael. the crews are performing emergency repairs and providing residents with complimentary vehicle checks from storm damage.

When Modern Tire Dealer asked where the mobile crews are operating, and which markets they'll serve, the company said, "At this time there are two Pep Boys Mobile Crew units. They were both recently deployed to the Florida Panhandle to assist vehicle owners during Hurricane Michael recovery efforts. For up-to-the-minute location updates of either crew, be sure to follow the Pep Boys social media channels."

The Mobile Crew is on Facebook.

“We know our customers balance extraordinary demands in their lives and on their time,” says Brian Kaner, president of service for Icahn Automotive. “Pep Boys Mobile Crew is a natural extension of our ongoing investment in customer convenience and value, and the first comprehensive mobile automotive maintenance provider to be affiliated with a national service network.”

The mobile crew will coordinate with businesses to bring the Pep Boys rig to their sites. Once that visit is scheduled, vehicle owners will be able to book service appointments online. They can bring their vehicles to work, leave the keys in the onsite Mobile Crew drop box, and pick up the keys when the services are complete.

Pep Boys points to statistics in the Auto Care Association's 2018 Factbook as a driver for its new business model. The association reported only 40% of motorists followed the manufacturer recommended scheduled maintenance on their vehicles. Of the drivers who delayed the work, more than 20% cited lack of a convenient time to do the work as the reason. Sixteen percent of owners said choosing a repair provider based on the located needed was a problem.

Kaner says early feedback on Pep Boys Mobile Crew has been positive, “Vehicle owners are impressed by how convenient Pep Boys is making car care and the extensive range of services our Pros are able to perform through the Mobile Crew trailer.”
