Sumitomo Rubber USA LLC and Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. are recalling 138 Kelly-branded commercial truck tires because the tires don’t have the proper markings on their sidewall, including tire size, maximum load weight and speed restrictions.
The Kelly Armorsteel KDA tires, in size 11R22.5, were manufactured between Dec. 4 and Dec. 17, 2016, in Tonawanda, N.Y., a plant that was previously jointly owned by Sumitomo and Goodyear.
The tires are missing this information: tire size, maximum load rate, speed restriction, number of plies, the word ‘tubeless; and load range.
About 450 tires were manufactured during the period; all but 138 of the tires have so far been located.
The problem occurred after one plate containing the information became loose from the mold. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says without the required information, the tires could be overloaded and increase the risk of a crash.
Both Sumitomo and Goodyear will send letters to the owners of these tires asking them to contact an authorized Goodyear/Kelly dealer to arrange to have the tires inspected and replaced, if necessary, at no charge with the same Kelly Armorsteel tire that has the proper markings.
